Original article:
Syed Mokhtar al-Bukhary is n the news again. According to business news portal Taikors and Taikuns, which named him their Taikor of the Month, he's going to be new owner of Proton, which owns Lotus (pics above). And Proton's Syed Zainal doesn't know it yet? Sounds fantastic, the last time some of us met Syed Zainal, he said things at Proton were starting to really happen.

PROTON TO BE FOLDED INTO DRB HICOM

GOVERNMENT THROWS IN THE TOWEL, FORMS MALAYSIA’S LARGEST AUTOMOTIVE GROUP AND PARKS LOTUS UNDER THE DRB STABLE

The nod has been given for DRB Hicom Bhd to take over the embattled national car company, Proton Hioldings Bhd, marking the end of several failed attempts to bring in a global automotive partner to arrest Proton’s declining market share at home and its miniscule exports abroad.

In a rare case of a component supplier making a successful buyout bid for its car manufacturer client, DRB Hicom together with several ex-Proton managers had formally submitted a bid to buy 32 per cent of Proton in September 2009.

Since then, behind-the-scenes negotiations have been held on-and-off, without the involvement of Khazanah Nasional Berhad or Proton management.

Proton group managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir is reportedly still unaware of the deal having been concluded, though sources say he is likely to keep his job, while reporting to a new boss, DRB Hicom group managing director Datuk Seri Mohd Kamil Jamil.

DRB Hicom is not a Geely! It never was and chances are it will never be!

If Khazanah and the govt were at all serious about transparency and good governance, they should have put up the stake in Proton for sale by open tender, open to local and international companies.

Or are they still fixated on the idea of a national automotive champion?

This in a world where Volvo is taken over by a Chinese company and Jaguar and Land Rover belong to an Indian company!

It seems that the erzatz nationalism peddled by the likes of Tun Dr Mahathir still hold sway amongst the movers and shakers in Putrajaya! Not that it did Malaysia any good, seeing as how Volkswagen backed away from an alliance with Proton!

Apa beza pun DRB beli Proton? So what? Proton is still a Proton? Those jokers in Khazanah will still be in Khazanah. So, no impact to the public. Yg buat duit will always be the advisers/brokers/consultants. Rakyat Malaysia will still suffer have to pay for expensive car for the rest of our life.

    Datuk,

Think Proton will be better off with NAZA, the NAZA bros have better 'pengalaman' and connection in motor/vehicle trade than Syed Mokhtar's Datuk 54 (of the Sultan Johor murka dengan duit raya RM 1 juta).

But of course, Syed Mokhtar has better connection...

    This is no news lah.
Its a 'Malay' property going back to another 'Malay' concern, while the earlier guys operating it have benefitted from the 'sudden' opportunity given by the NEP.

A classic way how the Malay turned Indian MBBS fellow made people scavange an instititution for many years while he pocketed the cream for himslef and his family.

It would be GREAT news (full of protests too by PERKASA) if this company was 'gifted' to Vincent Tan.

Now, we only see, greedy Malays clamouring for such companies to Ali Baba it out to others for a fee.

What better business skills do these buggers actually have over the Ali Babas?

The real Malays (honest, willing to work hard and match the skills of the non-Malays through the halal way) are still spectators in their own country... witnessing more opportunities slip away from them. All because of the greeedy buggers who do not know when to stop.

Bernas - nasib baik orang makan beras, kalau tak dah lama bungkus.

Tolong jangan malukan Tun Dr. M. Penat orang tua tu bantu. Berbual/bermimpi berjam-jam kat kedai kopi tak akan maju company.

  14. Rockey,Proton failed because its manufacturing cost are high due to the directive given to it by the corrupts in the govt where Proton can only buy its spare parts from a certain suppliers only. This resulted in high manufacturing cost where only a high selling price can cover and as a result Proton cannot compete in the open market. For example,Proton must buy its power steering rack and radiator from 2 suppliers only because certain top officials of the govt is either a shareholder of the supplier or they are receiving kickback from the supplier. Hopefully, with DRB in the picture all this corruption will be removed and I am sure PROTON will be competitive.

Hmm...now DRB has denied this. The scoop being scooped by reality?

Or has Volkswagen persuaded DRB to concentrate on assembling VW cars for the time being?

Push comes to shove, the govt will have to divest Proton, the sensitivities of Dr Mahathir notwithstanding. If the Brits can let go of Mini, Land Rover, Jaguar, Bentley and Rolls-Royce to foreign buyers, what's a pipsqueak Proton gonna do?

It's not as if Proton has any revolutionary technology that it's rivals would salivate over.

Kita orang Melayu patut berbangga, anak didik TDM berjaya menguasai ekonomi Malaysia.

Tun Dr. Mahathir.

Kita perlu bersama-sama YABhg Tun, Y.Bhg.

SM via DRB will try to work out a partnership with VW ie 45(DRB)/55(VW).Of course, VW will be controlling stake to transfer technologies(this is how they will spin the deal).

Following up, via another company. DRB will take over Proton ie % 50%(DRB)/ 40% (Proton/govt)& 10%(SM). No alarm rang as all in within Malaysian ownership.

Of course, the internal understanding is that the majority share owner i.e. DRB will let WV does all the work and directions.

Yes, Proton may get better quality parts but all is still going through the mill. Obviously we wont be getting any cheaper national cars. Tough luck Malaysians!

And the conclusions of your erudite analysis are what, precisely?

But that would be too easy, wouldn't it?

So, pray tell us what is it people like Syed Mokhtar or Halim Saad or Tajudin Ramli or the guy who got the original contract to build offshore patrol vessels for the Navy have achieved?

    Amen to that!

If Proton had tied up with Volkswagen, perhaps we could have seen VW's 1.4 TSI turbo-charged engine and 7-speed DSG transmission in a Proton car.

Instead of having to spend big bucks on a VW Golf 1.4 TSI with 7-speed DSG!

When was the last time any Malaysian VVIP or VVVIP rode around in a Proton?

Now lets see the usual Nazri Razak, Khazanah boys trick.

A GLC which is producing money, like Sime Darby,IJN, Proton. how to make money with no risk?

    1. Merger
    2. Buy out
    3. Go through "proper" paper process i.e use your brother, father in law approval etc..

    Steps to execute

    1. find banker willing to finance.
    2. Find friendly buyer
    3. Prepare "paper" to justify
    4. Prepare supposedly profits,
    synergy!

Voila.. commission of 10% for these buggers.

No difference to the public. But merger fees must be paid to proposer/lawyers/financiers.

Is this a crime of no victim? No so. Many malay executives, directors lost their post.

Giant Sime Darby lost 4 billion.

The proposer keep his hundreds of millions commission!

    kepada anonymous,

SM bukan orang Melayu. Dia orng Yemen.
