SORRY PM

"..if I was wrong, I don't want to lie. I will apologise to all." This was what the PM said hours ago of the statement he made last month that his son's company, Scomi, was not getting any government contracts.

[Please read the Bernama report here]

During the Aug 7 interview, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi stiffly denied that his son had abused his position as the PM's son to get government contracts from for Scomi. This was immediately disputed, especially on the Net. Scomi's PR exercise on Aug 20 did little to convince people that it got its projects on its own merits.

Now Abdullah said he received a letter saying he had lied." I read the contents of the letter. There is some information which I don't know about because I don't run my son's business. I don't ask him (Kamaluddin) to report to me. He's already an adult.
"I've asked for a report from Scomi. Let me see. If I was wrong, I don't want to lie. I will apologise to all."

Scomi was not the only issue from the Aug 7 interview. The PM had also:

1/ declared that no Malaysian company was controlled by foreign companies.
[The same week, he was forced to admit that Pantai Holdings were in the hands of Singaporeans and that it was a problem. This led to the creation of the Joget Pantai Irama].

2/ defended son-in-law's purchase of shares in ECM Libra.
[ Khairy Jamaluddin sold all those shares soon after].

    Saudara Rocky,

Dalam istilah psikiatri, 'denial' adalah ''a state in which a person is unable or unwilling to see the truth or reality about an issue or situation.''

    Tun Teja Ratna Benggala,
    Pandai membelah lada sulah;
    Jikalau tuan kurang percaya,
    Mari bersumpah kalam Allah.

    Sapu tangan di dalam dulang,
    Anak udang mati dituba;
    Dalam kitab telah melarang,
    Perbuatan haram jangan dicuba.

    Kapal Anjiman disangka hantu,
    Nampak dari Kuala Acheh;
    Rosak iman kerana nafsu,
    Rosak hati kerana kasih.

    Terima kasih.

    Bru,

Something's not quite right here. The TV3 interview was pre-recorded, they even had short promo takes on it the day before!Surely the speech writers, policy makers and media planners of Tingkat Empat would have vetted through! They should be sacked! I wouldn't want to speculate whether the Prime Minister reads or doesn't read or doesn't care about what's happening around him or even what his people around him does. But if this apology is supposed to absolve (??) him of any wrongs...he (and his advisors...they've got to be kidding.

That it took him this long to realise his folly when Shah Hakim the top guy at Scomi had come out page one in Mingguan Malaysia is even more baffling! PM doesn't read the papers kah?

Or could it be that the PM too has lost faith in the mainstream papers?? (Maybe he should put more faith in the bloggers...)

Bru, the PM has proven he is detached from some real serious wheelings and dealings that goes around him...Scomi, ECM-Avenue Cap(Remember the quotes: "I don't know, I am not involved"), Parkway-Pantai...

I think we should revisit his competence at understanding several past issues that is now a point of contention i.e. sale of MV Agusta and the Crooked Bridge and his current spend, spend, spend attitude...Is Dr M right on the half-past six Government?

Bru, read the news item below and it proves that PM had not told the truth in his TV3 interview with Annuar Zaini. So he must apologize.
It's very bad for the people when PM is uninformed about his children's business activities.

SCOMI Subsidiary Lands Five Contracts for Work in Malaysia
Scomi Group Wednesday, January 25, 2006

Scomi Group's subsidiary, Kota Minerals & Chemicals Sdn Bhd, has been awarded five contracts for the provision of drilling fluid materials, equipment and services in Malaysia. Based on the number of wells indicated in the joint tender document which is subject to the actual drilling activities to be undertaken by its clients, Scomi estimates that the contracts will generate a revenue of approximately RM1.5 billion (approximately US $400 million).

The contracts were awarded separately by Sarawak

Shell Berhad / Sabah Shell Petroleum Co Ltd, Nippon Oil Exploration (Malaysia) Ltd., Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhdand ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Malaysia Inc, to support all their drilling activities in East and West Malaysia including deep water drilling. The contracts are for four years with options to extend for another two years.

"Our track record and competitiveness are the key factors contributing to our success today. We are a player in a very high risk oil and gas industry, thus there is no compromise to our services." said Ridzuan Ali, SVP - Malaysia Operations for drilling fluids and drilling waste management.

The contracts are inclusive of the provision of drilling waste management namely the solids control equipment and services. Prior to the new contracts, Scomi had been providing drilling fluids services in East Malaysia for Sarawak Shell and in West Malaysia for Petronas Carigali and ExxonMobil, for 3 + 2 years.

"We have a good track record with proven technology. It is a long term confidence that we are building with our customers, to achieve a win-win situation." added Ridzuan.

Scomi is also participating in a similar tender by Murphy Oil Corporation, for its drilling activities in Malaysia, which contract is expiring in March 2006. Scomi has been servicing Murphy in Malaysia since 2003.

"We are confident of executing the contracts in the most efficient manner for our clients. We have a good customer base and our operations are well supported by our technical team at the Global Research & Technology Centre." said Ridzuan.

Drilling Fluids and Drilling Waste Management is Scomi's largest business unit today, which has activities at 60 locations in 34 countries. As of the third quarter 2005, the unit contributed approximately 72% to Scomi group's revenue. Scomi's largest drilling fluids operation is in Malaysia, where it runs a full research and technology centre with a complete technical team to support its worldwide operations in the areas of product development, testing and training.

With the new contracts coupled with the positive outlook of the global oil & gas industry, Scomi is positive about its growth potentials. Scomi is expecting growth in all its five core businesses of Drilling Fluids and Drilling Waste Management Solutions and related engineering services, Marine Vessel Transportation, Manufacturing Business, Products & Services, and Oilfield Production and Enhancement Chemicals.

Tu la awat dok buat lawak pangge kawan dia anwar zaini interview? Ni kawan jeneh sokong bawak rebah. Kalu pangge pemberita cabuk pun lagi baik. Datuk kamarulzaman pun makan gaji buta ka? Dok sabotaj Pak Lah macam buat buat apa? Takkan Pak Lah tak tau anak, menantu, adik kakak dan ipar dia meniaga. Eh, lawak nooooooooooooo...

Kalau mereka guna nama PM tanpa pengetahuan PM, lagi lah pulak. Saya tak fikir, Kalimullah rujuk semua perkara pada PL. Kalau ada pun, separuh benar je, separuh lagi dia spin, macam dia spin kat NST dan surat khabar di bawah kekuasaannya. PL mana ada masa nak dengar semua pun. Dia letak kepercayaan pada Kalimullah sajalah. Jadi, depa pun mula cuba tutup kebaikan, legasi Tun Dr Mahathir dan bongkar keburukan Tun. Logiknya senang saja, kalau Tun tak campur tangan lagi, mujlut Tun dah tutup, depa boleh buat apa saja yang depa suka. Depa ada cakap, bila Tun buka mulut saja, dia buat kacau. Persoalannya, Tun kacau siapa?. Kacau depa nilah.
Itulah sebab Hishamuddin Aun dilantik jadi GEIC sebab dia memang tak kenal PL. Dia wartawan sukan ajer dan tak kenal politicians pun. Jadi orang-orang kuat NSTP tu tak perlu bimbang sebab Hishamuddin bukan reti berpolitik pun.

  7. Undur lah, Pak Lah
    (Step Down, Pak Lah!)
    M. Bakri Musa (www.bakrimusa.com)

Intro: It is not a pretty sight to see Abdullah Badawi drowning. He is way over his head, and taking his party, race, and nation down with him. He should step down and let UMNO selects its new leaders this November.

Few images could match the pathos of a man struggling to keep his head above water as he is drowning. A more tragic scene would be seeing a Mongoloid child quietly slipping underwater, oblivious of the mortal danger he is in as he sinks down, grinning. No intimations of fear or helplessness; a few moments later he would be found lifeless at the bottom of the pond.

This is the image Prime Minister Abdullah currently projects, and it is not far from the reality. He is way above his head, and is blissfully unaware of it. He still maintains the “elegant silence” of a Pak Bisu (the lovable deaf-mute uncle), and a “What? Me Worry?” grin of Mad Magazine’s Alfred Neuman.

He is sinking fast, and he does not know it. He is also taking his party and the nation down with him. Unfortunately, it is not within our culture for those closest to him to warn him of the impending disaster, much less to rescue the poor soul. On the contrary, they would continue to shield him from the harsh reality, all the way down to the bottom of the pond. They are more interested in protecting their own interests rather than in saving the man or the nation.

Undur lah, Pak Lah! Step down, Pak Lah! Spare your party, race and the nation you love needless grief.

Come what may, Pak Lah is going into the history book as the most undynamic insignificant PM of Malaysia. His biggest mistake was to accept the post of PM when he himself is unqualified to do the job. He thought by relying on his trusted friends and support groups, he can run the country well but it backfired big time. The moment he stressed that this country is to look at agricultural sector to drive the country is the moment everyone realise that Pak Lah know nuts about bringing this country to greater heights. Either someone is giving him the wrong advice or he himself is too ignorant about the pace of progress this country has undergone. Within a short period of time, he has undone what his previous successor had put in place and the rate he is going, I fear our country will lack far behind in future.

Something is terribly wrong, how can we, the Malaysian rakyat save this country? Or are we allowed to?

    Dear all,
Its tragic when the highest and most important member of our government has openly admitted that was in the dark over the various ventures made by scomi. Why is he apologising? Is it because he ought to have known of scomi's activities or is it because he ought to have kept his mouth shut?
The state of this man's mind is shocking. If such pieces of information have eluded him, then one can only wonder what other businesses of the state has gone on unnoticed too. It also brings to mind the capacity of those who are supposed to advice him - where are they? Are they truly as incompetent as this? or is there something far more sinister going on?

    Dear Rocky,
Denial Syndrome is synonym with the present administration.
We have seen and heard more lies than truth. In Korea or Japan, leaders will resign if they make a mistake but not here in Malaysia. Leaders hold on to power as if it is their birth right and will not go willingly unless they are forced too. Paklah maybe a good person and a good father but he is definitely not a leader. He seems to be ignorant on a lot of issues and this is costing the nation. Pantai, Ecm ,Scomi and other blunders that are being committed. I am now convinced that we did offer Singapore , sand and airspace in return for the straight bridge. No wonder he could not even answer the 4 simple questions by Dr M.
I hope Allah will show him the right path and he will resign and passed the responsibility to someone who has the ability and capability to lead us.
We can no longer afford to be fooled by him.

Bru, are we going to be satisfied with just the PM apologizing? I don,t think so. Not me. He spoke untruth. It's an impeachable offence. His negligence over Pantai, the cancellation of crooked bridge, the Bakun Hydro-electric Dam and Railway Double Tracking are costing billions of taxpayers' money in compensation. He is not one of the Bujang Lapok. He cannot sing maafkan kami! maafkan kami! maafkan kami! This is not a joke. Not "why me worry?" as Bakri Musa wrote in his blog and you picked it up. More appropriately "tiada maaf bagimu." He knows the answer!

He is surrounded by crooks who spin and lie. Once you start to lie, it is very difficult to cover no matter how smart the spinners or advisers.

Remember SCOMI's CEO Shah Jakim also said Kamaluddin not involved in managing SCOMI and few directors even have met him. And now Pak Lah said
"......There is some information which I don't know about because I don't run my son's business. I don't ask him (Kamaluddin) to report to me. He's already an adult....."

What a whole bunch of idiots.

Bro Rocky, you should start a thread on lies made by under the current administration.

Looks like we are into Temberang Way of Life under this administration.

Give him benefit of doubt? Halo, he is a Prime Minister not a junior clerk, how can he be so callous? Or is he really not competence?

The PM is willing to appologis while his countrymen rambles over the issues surrounding his family. But what everyone considers petty is youngsters running around town like headless chickens. And yet no one wants to address it.
And when a study is conducted certifying KL as being a danger hub...newsmen go do their rounds and get a handful of people (most of them either friends or associates) trying in vain to deny the fact KL, adding the city is indeed safe.
Wake up and smell the coffee...while you all show your disgruntle here, it could be your kids cycling around Dataran Merdeka, shirtless, shouting like apes or your 14 year old daughter could be making out with the guy next door. Heck, I bet even Mr Rocky would feel rather insecured walking alone around Puduraya as he would be a threat to the other long haired mamats on the streets and might ending up getting whacked up by a gang of 10. Look around you, youngsters are getting from bad to worse...does the PM knows about this? My money is placed on his ignorance. Most of you will kick the bucket in 20 years to come, leaving people like me to suffer the end fate. Like what OCM's Dato' Sieh Kok Chi once said..."I dont blame the younger generation as we (older generation) have failed in educating them". Sigh!

So pathetic, this PM of ours. After publicly denying his son’s involvement in business to millions of Malaysians on TV, now he says “if I was wrong, I don’t want to lie. I will apologise to all."

    Noticed he said “if”. Lol!!!

Which means, he is giving the benefit of the doubt to his son.

Typical of Pak lah ‘s response - suruh buat “report”, set up “suruhanjaya”, “tak involved”, “tak tahu”, “don’t question my intention”, “it's my idea”, “enough!” and “I am the Prime Minister”.

Why does he need a report when this has already been reported in the newspapers - in fact by the mainstream newspapers?

What kind of Prime Minister is he when he doesn’t seem to know :-

    * ECM Libra was buying into Capital Avenue although it would have required his approval as the Finance Minister

    * Pantai Holding was being controlled by a foreign

    * his son's company, Scomi, was getting projects worth millions of ringgit from the Government and GLCs

    Its damn scary, man!

And I say, no Pak Lah, tiada lagi maaf bagi mu!

In Islam, a sincere apology is treated very seriously, as a means of pacifying a situation and avoiding more confusion. In normal protocol, a sincere apology is indicative of the person acknowledging his mistake, and willingness to take blame.

And yet commentators here are baying for his blood. Don't get me wrong. If he has done wrong, anyone for that matter, then a fitting punishment must follow.

But lets take the apology first. Take it in the context of the willingness of a man no less than a leader of a developing nation to eat humble pie.

Before anyone accuses me as Pak Lah's PR person or pro-UMNO or pro-establishment, I will make it clear that I am none of the above.

I'm just looking at Pak Lah as a human being first; and how much it must have embarassed him when he discoverd that he may be (or is, depending on where one stands) wrong.

Before that there was the son-in-law case that may have also caused him much grief as a human being. Like any father out there when he discovers what his family has done wrong, he must feel the pain as a father and a human being first.

I agree on the opinion that people around him will more than likely shield him from facts, even until its too late.

But spare a thought too. While is Yang Amat Berhormat Dato' Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, he is also Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Malaysian, father of two, with feelings just like us.

  21. Rocky!

As Amir Mamood Razak said AAB as a human being with feelings he must be sincere in that for him to just step down before this country gone totally economically, politically and socially awry. We have seen how Mat Rempit reacting to violent when told by citizens they were making noises so loud that law-abiding citizens cannot sleep. THis is due to Umno leaders making irresponsible statement to legitimise youth using motorbikes as weapon of mass destruction. So AAB and Khairy if you are sincere as human being with feelings just relinquish you political positions and take the much needed rest in the case of Pak Lah!
How can a Prime Minister make a mistake on fact in a pre-recorded interview, Pak Lah we are not children anymore to be lied upon!

    May God bless us everyone!

    amir mahmood,

When you are the Prime Minister, you have to be respected. You are the leader of our country. You have to be better than us all, You have to have integrity. You cannot be like the next guy. That is why you are the PM. So that you can take this country to (cliche) greater heights. Get it, Amir?
I am not belittling the PM. If I have no respect for him as the PM, the country's supreme leader,I do for him as an older person.
And this is not about apologising, and saying sorry.it is about him having to apologise for something for which he could have mistakenly said. Even then, he is not sure whether he said the wrong thing. He is a man unsure of many things.

    Anak Malaysia,

Yes I agree that a leader has to be respected to be able to play a role of implementer and thus lead is charges to greater heights.

Yes I also believe that he has to be better than the rest; after all that is the SOP for nature.

All I am espousing is to treat the man as a human being first, one that has feelings just like us. The greater man has to be able to treat an enemy with a level of respect that considers the enemy's human side, and not ruthlessly attack him.

But hear me the first time; a mistake is a mistake and must be punished. But there is no need to embarass the person or treat the "offender" with reduced dignity.

That will perpetuate wrong values among the subjects.

I am with the masses that is suspect about the capability of the man leading us through the early new millenium - after all the body will not do what the mind and soul does not understand - but I also appeal for some sanity.

When Mahathir led, there were many disgruntled voices too, calling for his blood and his resignation. Yet today there's a fairly loud voice out there asking for due respect be accorded to the former premier, despite his shortcomings.

The calmer mind has the greater ability to make sensible decisions and choices. Stay calm Malaysians. Get what you want but do it with civility.

People, we need leaders with Vision ( for the country that is) like Tun Mahathir.
    It shows...
He should check his facts before the interview. Good leaders anticipate what's coming, and knows how to make the listeners/viewers feel comfortable.
This current guy just do not have it!
In one interview with Global TV Indonesia just before the F1 race, he was asked why the Malaysian government built the Sepang racetrack, he answered innocently " It's for the benefit of the Malaysian people, good economically and good for sports in the country".

Had it been Tun, I'm sure it'll be " We are giving the opportunity for people around this region especially indonesians to be able to enjoy the world class event at our own backyard. Don't need to travel far to experience and mingle with the world's best.It not only good for malaysians but will also benefit people from Singapore, Indonesia, and around the region".

First rule in presentations, know your audience first! Where have all the advisors gone?
