Demos: The good, the bad and the ugly (and a crash course with Sanusi Junid)

A peaceful masked protester from a developed country. Click HERE to read story
"Malaysia is OUR COUNTRY ... do not let the likes of Ibrahim Ali or Ambiga, and those bent on tearing Malaysia apart for their benefits, to prevail." - Tony Yew in his posting Don't Push It, written after he lodged a police report against
another blogger who had asked all Christians to march for the persecution against "us and our Lord".

Bangkok street protests: Soldier beaten up

Jakarta street protest: Clashes

Manila burning

Singapore: No mercy towards trouble makers so protesters work hard to look real harmless

Myanmar protests: No mercy towards anyone, no matter how harmless

Last night my brother-in-law called from Singapore to say that he was postponing his trip back to our kampung in Melaka next week. He had been told that it would not be safe to travel in Malaysian because of the Bersih walk. I told him that if he was driving up only to Melaka and not planning to visit KL, it should be OK. Still, he said he'd play it safe. He and my sister will go back to kampung the following week, after the demonstrations.

Wow, what have they been hearing about us in Singapore?

This morning I thought of calling back my sister to tell her that she and hubby shouldn't postpone their drive up. But I realized that I can't blame them for deciding to stay away during the July 9 weekend. When they demonstrated in Bangkok, Yangon, Jakarta and Manila, where lives were  lost in street clashes between police and demonstrators and demonstrators vs other demonstrators from rival political parties, the rest of the world sat back and watched from the safety of their living rooms.

I took part in the Bersih 1.0 in 2007 because the organizers assured us it was apolitical. It turned out to be anything but. At the end of the walk, near the Istana, the organisers set up their political circus. Big Opposition names suddenly emerged in front of tv cameras to peform their tricks. No, Bersih can't fool me twice and claim to be apolitical.

On July 9, I'm sure there will be some unsuspecting would-be marchers, who believe that they are wearing yellow for a good cause and not for some people's hidden political agenda. But they should be told at least that there will be another group of marchers, who will be clad in red, who are serving the political interests of some other people. If these two groups clash, you think they are going to hug each other and exchange greetings and phone numbers?
Most unlikely.

On Twitter, some individuals who are defending Bersih (but who are unlikely to take part because they are outstation or due to other unforeseen circumstances) continue to argue that the authorities are discriminating against Bersih. They cited events such as the recent gathering of 1 million youths in Putrajaya and even the people's demonstration against the British led by the Malay leaders in the pre-Merdeka days.

Sanusi Junid, the former Cabinet minister who has taken part in demonstrations in London and Acheh, explains the difference between good demonstrations and bad demonstrations (like good cholesterol and bad cholesterol), H E R E.

And if you think the cops in developed countries just watch and smile at demonstrators because it's their democratic right to gather and march, try this picture from the 2009 protest in London where one man died and fake police uniforms were found after the protests ...

    Good demos & bad demos?

Indonesia and Thailand had multifarious street protests, yet there is apparently no diminution of foreign investor interest in their economies.

Thailand has this big ongoing debate about whether there has been over-zealous applications of lese majeste laws by the "establishment" against the mainly rural supporters of Thaksin. It's the red shirts vs the yellow shirts (did Bersih get the idea of yellow garments from Thailand?).

Or would we be better off foregoing street demos in favour of unbridled warfare in the social media space?

    Dear Rocky Bru,

I really like your article entitled "Demos: The good, the bad and the ugly (and a crash course with Sanusi Junid)". The media photos posted should remind people like Anwar Ibrahim, Lim Kit Siang and Ibrahim Ali as what is considered a peaceful protest and not "emotional demonstrations" that had been politicised by the opposition parties, namely PKR, DAP & PAS.

The others especially the identified organisers are tools of the opposition platform and they should be given a final warning by the police, should they insist to go ahead with their July 9 demonstration in the heart of KL city.

In the event that, the demonstration turns ugly as in 2007, the police should arrest all those concerned under ISA, including the opposition leaders irrespective of their status and position without immunity.

Malaysian street demonstrators are not disciplined like our friends from across Singapore or even those in Philippines or Thais. We are no better than the Indonesian demonstrators.

One of the solutions is to suggest that if the opposition insist to go ahead of the July 9 demonstration, they should be advised to change their venue from KL city center to Putrajaya and protest in front of the Office of the Election Commission(SPR). This move will not only justify the opposition's demand for the electoral reforms, but prove that they can demonstrate peacefully without emotion in order to convey their concern of the issues raised against SPR.

THEY SHOULD NOT TAKE THE LAW INTO THEIR OWN HANDS AND DEMONSTRATE AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT AS WELL AS TO IMPLICATE THE YDP AGONG IN THEIR POLITICAL AGENDA. THE ISSUES RAISED ARE ALSO DEBATABLE IN PARLIAMENT AND THEREFORE, THERE IS NO JUSTIFICATION TO HOLD THE BN GOVERNMENT IN RANSOM. IN THE NAME OF DEMOCRACY, NOBODY SHOULD STOP THE OPPOSITION IN THEIR AGENDA TO CAPTURE PUTRAJAYA. HOWEVER AS LAW MAKERS, THEY HAVE TO RESPECT THE CONSTITUTION AND NOT TO OVERTHROW THE BN GOVERNMENT BY FORCE AS THEY HAD TRIED IN 2007.

I WISH TO ADVISE THE OPPOSITION TO START THEIR IDEOLOGY AND MANIFESTO CAMPAIGNS NOW IN THE RUNNING UP OF THE 13TH GENERAL ELECTION. STREET DEMONSTRATIONS WILL ONLY EFFECT THE POLITICAL AND ECONOMY OF THE COUNTRY WHICH THE BN GOVERNMENT HAD MAINTAINED IN FOR THE LAST 54 YEARS SINCE THE NATION'S INDEPENDENCE.

Despite whatever the initial intention are, it is clear now that this march is nothing more than a tool for at least 2 groups.

    a. To promote certain politician waning popularity.
    b. To promote the return of communist ideology.

While I will not get into the first point (since it is already widely accepted and known), I will attempt to explain the 2nd.

Parti Socialis Malaysia as it name suggest aim to promote the idea of Socialism in Malaysia. First off, Socialism has failed throughout the world time and again due to the many flawed in its very premise. The fundamental flaw is that no incentive is provided to individuals.

Socialism generally over promises and under delivers. The proponent promise to bring equality, security, and prosperity. This however almost never come to fruition. In reality it always ended with tyranny and misery. Well, equality was at times achieved, in that all are equally miserable. More often than not, individuals suffer as their needs become secondary to the welfare of the state and the ruling elites.

Then there is another dangers. One that concern us the most.

Socialism and communism are alike in that both are systems of production for use based on public ownership of the means of production and centralized planning. While socialism grows directly out of capitalism, communism on the other hand is a further development or "higher stage" of socialism.

While definition differ slightly, what each of them means in essence is,

"From each according to his ability, to each according to his deeds" (Socialism).

"From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" (Communism).

So for PSM to be glorifying Chin Peng "The Butcher of Malaya" and other communist terrorist is only natural. Something to be expected.

For those who fought and lost their lives defending this country from the onslought of communist terrorist, there can be no greater insult.
It is incongruent to say we appreciate the sacrifices made by the generation that fought and defended this country and at the same time allowed this bunch of Socialist, Communist (in disguise) and Modern Day Min Yuen trampled, threaten and spit on the very foundation that made this country.

We might as well let them piss on the grave of our fallen hero.

PSM was registered on the 19th of August 2008 after 10 years being denied to do so. Why, who and how this party was allowed to be registered baffled me.

There can be only one recourse, Banned PSM!!

Get RTM, TV3 and mainstream TV stations plus media to address their views to not only Ambiga but also to Khairy and Ibrahim.

The way the cops also issue warnings - all directed at Ambiga's event, what fairness is that lah bro?

You selectively close your eyes and ears to this... what disease is that lah?

Something strange... no cure for that pretending anyway.

UMNo too had organised many such demos without police permits. Did the nation go beserk then?

Or you want ot tell us that anything organised by UMNO means, police and the rest must not object even if no permit?

And the masjids shud not issue sermons condemning such things?

Maybe we can justify that UMNo organised ones were so sudden that the cops could not do anything?

Whereas Ambiga, Khairy and Inrahim have announced their intentions so well ahead and therefore the cops and BN leaders can issue threats, warnings and the likes through the mainstream media and political rallies?

    Sudah lah Rocky.

We do not need a lesson on communisism from you. But I know what lesson you need, you need a lesson in CommonSensalism.

You keep contradicting yourself. Example, you believe one of the objective of the Bersih is "to promote the return of communism". What make you think so? Is it the recent arrest of 30 ordinary men, women, and teenagers who possessed t-shirts with famous past communist leaders whom the PDRM claimed they were preparing to go to war against the monach.
What you believe is you own business but you immediately followed by saying that the communist ideology is dead and buried in the world we live in today, It proof that what you believe about the attempt to promote communism does vnot hold water.

As for your other hair brain suggestion the opposition politician is behind the rally, I partially agree with you, Opposition politician are involve as far as they support just and fair election. Anything more than that, they are on their own because Bersih do not want to get involve, Bersih is only interested in Just and Fair Election. Get this into your thick skull and do us a favor. Now that you have been made to understand the true objective of the rally, tell your friends whom previously have the same perception about Bersih like you, what Bersih is all about. Thank you very much.

Oh sure, Sanusi Junid that great UMNO libertarian who once marched with er... Ghandhi...and Mandela??

Then it must all have been legit, and God-justified.

But God forbid if others, like Ambiga should march to protect grand principles. They should be arrested under ISA and put away for good.

But not those who marched in Penang without permits or gathered illegally to, like KJ, threaten Condoleeza Rice or like Ibrahim Ali who made a racist threat to the Chinese and showed his religious bigotry and misogyny by referring to Ambiga as "that bloody Hindu woman

We've had enough of these Ketuanan crap, double standards and selective amnesia.

  19. Wow, I never knew you were a Mubarak and a Ghadaffi supporter. In the same light considering the Shah of Iran too was brought down by a demonstration, you would have preferred the Shah, Marcos, Suharto, etc, etc, la. and I suppose if you were living in Nazi Germany, you'd be supporting Hitler too. Hmm, Ghandi must have been a mad man. Indians were foolish supporting his campaign against the legitimate rule of the British. And Mandela should never have been let out too. Maybe your good friend Tony does not realise it. But Jesus too was a bit of a revolutionary. He did after all go against the rule of the Pharasees. What do you think the ride on the donkey through the gates of Jerusalem was all about? Surely it was to protest something or other. And Martin Luther King. Boy, the Americans should have employed some of our tactics don't you think? But then again in those days they did not have any mindless mat rempits did they? I am little confused actually. Why do they consider all of these people as heros? Some of them even reverently.

    Dear AkuMelayu,
It's not that I have become smarter or Zorro has remained stupid (coz that is basically saying I was stupid then, hehe).

It is simply a matter of me realizing after Bersih 2007 that Bersih is a political tool and its aim is only to promote its political masters.

"Free and fair election" is just a cover!

I can't speak for Zorro. Maybe he still believes in Bersih. Maybe he believes in promoting Anwar at all cost, including using Bersih. You gotta to ask him that.

    Cheers

Upstarts some more who are of the wrong denominations and persuasions, Commies even!
