Ah, Datuk Nuraina Pak Samad

Datuk Nuraina & Hei Kersani
Anak Bapak. Ena, 55 this August, a Singapore-born Malaysian journalist for the last 3 decades or so, the Managing Editor of the New Straits Times, receives her Panglima Mahkota Wilayah this morning at the Istana Melawati in Putrajaya. I believe she is the first non-group editor/editor-in-chief/group editor-in-chief of the New Straits Times Press, the paper she joined back in 1978, who's been bestowed a datukship from the Agong.

She blogs at 3540 Jalan Sudin, which she started after we both left NST in February 2006, exactly 5 years ago. There's a book coming based on her Tuesdays with Bapak series, which had a good run until the death of her father Tan Sri A. Samad Ismail the Tokoh Wartawan Negara in Sept 2008. She co-founded the now-defunct National Alliance of Bloggers  and the NURIN Alert, which was recently adopted by the Cabinet and renamed NUR Alert. Datuk Nuraina is a trustee for the National Press Club and sits on the exco of the interim Blog House Malaysia, a new association to protect bloggers.

She is a product of ITM.

    Dato',

Congratulations to Datuk Noraina Samad! It is about time that she is bestowed a Datukship.

I am certain the then School of Mass Communications ITM and now the Faculty of Mass Communications UiTM is proud to have yet another one of its alumni a Datuk. There are already a few that include Datuk Zainal Azman and Datuk Poziah Abdul Rahman.

All the best to Datuk Noraina!

  8. Bro, another Dato' blogger on the list laa.. Ehehe..

Btw, it's quite a pity when no one bothers to give nor recommend a Dato'ship to Hei Kersani as a recognition for his fine works in our music industry..

But people in the likes of the "penyamun, penyangak, etc" are the ones who go it..

    Haish....

    Anon 2.49pm,

Apa yang Anon 12.55pm tu cakap betullah. Tepat. Jangan memandai tuduh dia jeles dan hina dia. Memang dah berlambak sangat pun orang bergelar Dato'/Datuk ni. Bak kata orang, kalau kita jerit Dato'/Datuk dalam restoran, hampir semua orang menoleh kecuali budak bangla bawa air. Akhirnya gelaran Dato'/Datuk dah tak bererti lagi.

    Btw Dato' Ahiruddin @ Rocky,

Dato' Nuraina bukanlah the first non editor/editor in chief/group editor who was bestowed a datukship by YdP Agong. Check your facts before writing.

Just like everybody else in BN, they crave for such titles. What good are such titles in terms of serving the rakyat?

Now got so many dato in newspapers. I hope they are smarter than this :

A COLLEGE lecturer lost RM30,000 after getting acquainted with a man who claimed to be a doctor on the social networking site Facebook, Kosmo! reported.

Pahang commercial crime chief Supt Zaini Jass said the victim, 49, got to know “Dr Bruce Burn” from the United States on Jan 7.

When they were communicating, the “doctor” told her that he was based in the United States and was looking for a companion to settle down with.

He further deceived her by saying that he was prepared to settle down in Malaysia after marriage and would be coming to the country to meet her.

However, Supt Zaini said a man, who claimed to be a customs officer, contacted the lecturer and told her that the “doctor” had been arrested at KLIA for carrying £25,000 (RM121,567) that was not declared.

“The victim then paid RM30,000 to free the man,” he said, adding that she lodged a report after she discovered she was conned when the doctor did not show up at her house.

datuk rocky: memang betul si fatimah sidek perkatakan. walaupun datukship nuraina di anugerah Yg dipertuan Agong, tapi, di-kira state award.

BTW....tahniah buat datuk nuraina. she deserves it..

    anon@12.25pm,

how you know, aah, they crave for titles?

i tell u, aaah,..khalid ibrahim is Tan Sri, of course, given when he was serving the BN government), Anwar Ibrahim also datuk Seri (gien when he ws...oh you know-lah), Zaid Ibrahim also...
    ustad Nik Aziz also....

you make that kind of judgment, aah...like a fool-lah.

sometimes people dont want titles but they are given. malays call it 'rezeki". they dont tolak. dont reject.. i'm sure you also will accept if you are offered a "datukship".

always the case -- you dont get -- gripe gripe, bitch, bitch...

Correction Datuk Rocky, the award given to Pn Noraina is not a Federal Datuk. The Federal Datuk or the Agong's Datuks are given out in honour of the King's birthday. What Pn Noraina received in a State Datuk from Fed. Territory. In any case, Datuk (Dato & Dato') is a dime a piece. Many Datuks I know have dropped the title from their names. They don't want to be counted among the fake and crooked "datuks".

Many people, especially the armchair critics, are oblivious to the "achievements" of journalists.

Discounting the long hours, shitty pay, the routine shelling from everybody (as everybody else think they are cleverer) and divorces, many give their heart and soul to right the wrong through journalism...Not that some of you morons give a fuck anyway...

Bukannya duduk kat pub mana entah, read the blogs, listen to some friends, garu telur sikit, write a few lines in a blog and claim to know better than others.

People like Aina deserves her Datukship...Be happy that it's not given to some shitty pothead...

And just in case you still think it's easy: why don't you quit your job and join journalism?

Give it a try la..see if you can tahan..

oiii fatimah sidek ooii (dah lah nama bukan nama sebenar, el bozo!).

kalau tak tahu, tanya. jangan biarkan hasad busukkan hati tuan.

    FT tu ialah FEDERAL Territory.

Kalau dapat Datukship sempena FT Day, ianya FEDERAL Datukship lah wei.

Tu sebab yang bagi pngat tu Yang diPertuan Agong, bukan Mayor KL atau RAJA Nong Chik Menteri WP.

Agong kalau bagi, Federal lah namanya wei!!

FT punya datuk kenak spell DATUK, sama macam Agong birthday punya DATUK.

State punya kena spell DATO'.

    Cool sis.

    To Kak Ena,

Congrats to Kak Ena! We know you would have rejected the "datukship" if you could because you believe that deserving journalists should be awarded after they retire.
but we know you were in a bind. how to say "no'? right?
Anyway, ma'am -- whoops, Datuk, I mean -- Tahniah. You sure deserve it.

I understand the question from Jeremy Irons. What exactly is her contribution to nation building? Isn't this the prerequisite for any form of awards or titles? Has she written a piece that will change the country, revolutionise a way of thinking etc..etc.. or did she just get hired by NST and then toed the line with the 'ruling' party?
