Curi-Curi Malaysia, the world's most expensive website

Tourism's RM36 million website! I wonder what Azalina, our Tourism Minister, thinks about the the Backbenchers' act of promoting outbound tourism (and to Taiwan, for that matter!).

And I wonder, too, what she thinks about the RM36 million that will be spent on a website proposed by her Ministry that is said to be capable of boosting Malaysian tourism over the next three years. That's RM1 million a month just to maintain a website. How expensive is that? Extortionate, I'd say.

But for the sake of fairplay and transparency, let's have the details of the website, shall we? It's the proposal that was passed by a sleepy Cabinet just before the start of Ramadan, I believe.

p.s. Curi-Curi Malaysia is not to be confused with Cuti-Cuti Malaysia.

  2. What's the difference?

Remember when she was the youth and sports minister?
The auditor general found something fishy with the account and yet Azlina did not learn anything.

Of course, we dont blame her totally, but yet she is the head and for sure she had read the proposal.

I,m quite sure the same gangster who robbed the youth and sports minitry will rob again.

  4. This Azalina must be the real big spender, and Pak Lah must really be impressed with her.

Why not winning the election twice in the row where no one dare to challenge her. She must really have a special attraction somewhere.

Ist it was the Sports Ministry, wow what a mess, and just a little bit lucky for us some of the money could not be spend in the High Perfomace Sport Centre somewhere near London.

Then came ZOOM, just another BILLBOARD with three smiling faces of Pak Lah, Najib and HER. Well if you look at it carefully, you see that the program was just Cuti Cuti Malaysia redesigned.

    Now Website ... WOW.

This must have been fantastic news, for now the whole world will be flocking into Malaysia through the net.

Who actually got the project haa!!!

Ha this is the same thing as what happened to MSN last time with some web-based staff reporting system. At least that was 10 times cheaper than this, but still expensive though. It was reported in Berita Harian / Utusan in the sports section previously in 2006/2007 period. Anyway that's her way, with blackberry and all the lavish spendings, its her style of getting job done.

    Hi,

I operate a webhosting operation and it only costs approximately
RM150.oo a month to host 500Gigabytes of webspace and 5,000 Gigabytes of bandswidth - enough to host thousands of webpages (or hundreds of websites) and allows for millions of visitors to the website! It's fast and has 99.9% uptime with strong back-ups and security.

Hell, for RM1 million a month, I will even throw in multi website advertisements, fine tune for various search engines and newspaper advertising in the countries targeted and even employ marketing staffs specific for the purpose of promoting tourism to international customers!

    Any takers????

RM36 million for website from tax payers money. Technology is getting cheaper and cheaper but BN expenditure is getting even more expensive.

Previously, they had spent hundreds of ringgit for a screwdriver. So, it makes sense actually.

    Hi Rocky,
Get ACA to check into this project "CONTRACT WITH MAJLIS SUKAN NEGARA MALAYSIA (MSN) PROJECT KNOWN AS "SISTEM PERLAKSANAAN LOGISTIK DAN PERMARKAHAN BERSEPADU UNTUK MAJLIS SUKAN NEGARA MALAYSIA (for SUKMA GAMES)". The system is not done by d awarded co but was given to MSN's staff named OMAR n they just came there acting to cover up d situation. The project only costs abt RM6Mil but was marked-up til RM11mil++ and as a return Azalina will be given RM2Mil. Tapi as usuallah, when it involves ministers semua lepas yg kenapun org bawahan je. (This project has also been highlighted in the newspaper as a failed project for Sukma). Azalina was so pissed- off (even their KSU & TKSU knew abt this) when d co failed to deliver d money n another co have to give d money after they were awarded this project "PROJECT UNTUK MEMBEKAL, MENGHANTAR, MEMASANG, MENGUJI DAN MENTAULIAH KOMPUTER DAN PERALATAN ICT BAGI IBU PEJABAT KEMENTERIAN BELIA DAN SUKAN (KBS) DAN PEJABAT-PEJABAT CAWANGAN KBS DI SELURUH MALAYSIA. NO TENDER: KBS.S.4-14/39(T.20.2006)" costs abt RM13Mil (if i'm not mistaken). And also check Rakan Muda's account lagilah corrupt...

  17. This new website will run on the very latest technology called Microsoft ASP on VBScript, and Microsoft SQL Server 7.0. It will be premised on the notion of a rich internet application (RIA) -- yes, it will use flash technology.

It will be highly scalable, and front-ended by a phalanx of low-power servers running on an open-sourced load-balancing software. This is needed to accommodate the legions of visitors expected to visit the website to check when the next Wau Flying competition is held.

To tie all these together, an experienced systems integrator (SI) based in Gombak will be appointed.

I hope you realise it takes a lot of money to get all these gear and people together. So shuddup already.

I remember Azalina when being a Minister of Sports trying to promote a sports center in the UK which purportedly cost a couple hundred of millions of ringgit, lucky the dumb idea was shot down by the powers that be. So we all need to a close eye on what she does in the Tourism Ministry.

Barulah Melayu glokal!! But our Tourism Minister ni ... now has proven again-n-again that she is good at spending lots-sa-money. Just look at her trail ... back in the Ministry of Youth & Sports (MYS) ... her lavish free spending of money ... her outrageous claims on traveling, group activities and what not … then the famous ‘screw-driver’ billing … which she claimed was not during her reign … now this whopping RM36 million website. Not to forget how she work around the system when her group of 20 personnel was turned down by ‘RM14K dentally enhanced’ DG … then the Minister’s good team beat the system by diverting money via an ad company handling MYS’s RTM ads (please read more from “Another Brick in the Wall” posting dated 4 September 2008). Also, while in the MYS she wanted to spend RM480 million sports centre in London when even when some good Mat Salleh said its stupid to doing so. She’s so brilliant when trying to spend and waste the public’s money … well why shouldn’t she … its not her money … and furthermore for sure there’s a leak in the system that she & her goons will get some commission from that. So these are the good people we want to represent us in government?? Great move PM great move. Take her out of MYS and present her with bigger & larger mines, Woooi sleepy head … ooooiiii PM … wake up!! Please god … save us!!

    Bro,

After the DG Dato Mirza Taiyyab was charged in Court for corruption over some weird RM13,000dental job, 'Happy Hour' has started at Azalina's Ministry of Tourism.

If you say that this most dubious RM36.0 million expenditure for a Ministry of Tourism Website was passed in Cabinet just before Ramadan, then it must be after the DG had been packed off on half pay and suspension.

You see the DG Dato Mirza was exactly against this type of money wasting projects. It is quite crazy to say that it is going to cost RM1.0 million a month to maintain a Website, RM36 million for 36 months. What happens after 36 months? Do they extend the contract by another 36 months for another RM36 million?

Ministry of Tourism officials know the type of bull that is breaking into the china shop. Dato Mirza was very effective in blocking such waste, to the great annoyance of those in power.

An honest man has been taken out. Now the money can flow in ernest.

  41. Bro Rock,

Perhaps the price quioted was in USD? Even then it would still be a hefty USD 10+ million a year, still.

Wonder how the multi million website would look like...

How much do we need to maintain a blog?

    A guestimate:
    RM99 for Streamyx/Broadband
RM60 for the coffees on late night postings
RM150 to bribe the children with gula-gula to not kacau the computer
    ...

RM3 million per month should make one helluva website.

    God bless, Bro.

I'm sure this was a proposal from her team of advisers who succeeded in transforming Malaysia's band of lethargic athletes into a world class act in a matter of four years, but at the expense of rakyat's money. Hi Rock. this pe..k.d is really too much la. Ever since shim (oops)was appointed Cabinet Minister she has never stop messing with the ministries concerned. Look at her time at the Youth and Sports Ministry. CYC debacle, sports centre in London, sports newspaper, to name a few, were all dubious projects created to gallop tax-payers money that failed miserably. Azlina handling of the ministry and her unprofessional behaviour as minister also demoralised the staff and officials. Now at the new ministry, she continued the trend. Remove the honest DG who has been in the ministry for so long for not taking blind orders. Politically, look why this minister refuse to accept post as division women chief but chose to go for position meant for MAN. The best part is Pak Lah, Najib and the rest seems to ok her. IF I WAS IN A POSITION OF POWER I COULD AND WOULD VERY EASILY SET UP A FANTASTIC WEBSITE FOR A MERE
    RM 50,000.00 or less.
    HOW?
Very simple, there are a lot of IT SPECIALIST OUT THERE WITH BRAINS, which by the way our government doesn't want to use.
    YES,
HAVE A COMPETITION,WITH A TAGLINE OF "SET UP A WEBSITE, WIN A COMPETITION AND GET A JOB" AND ADVERTISE IN THE PAPERS, TIMELINE 1 -2 MONTHS, THIS IS OPEN TO MALAYSIANS ONLY, and let a panel of independent I.T, BLOGGERS, JOURNALISTS AND TOURISM RELATED specialists be the judges, so that race will not play a PART BUT THE WINNER IS JUDGED BY the best idea, innovative website and of course MERIT AND OTAK, BUKAN KAUM.
PRIZE MONEY, RM 20,000 PLUS A JOB WITH THE MINISTRY CONCERNED, with a tax free(optional) salary of RM3,000 A MONTH TO UPDATE AND MAINTAIN THE WEBSITE, MANA TAK BOLEH.
First of all this will give a chance for the people who love challanges with the true MALAYSIA BOLEH SPIRIT, TO COME OUT WITH OUT OF THE BOX INNNOVATIVE IDEAS AND THIS WILL also give exposure to talented people, those with the top 20 websites can use this competition as a C.V. OF WORK DONE. LOOK AT THE BLOGGERS, 95% OF THEM HAVE BEAUTIFUL BLOGS, DIY,
DO-IT-YOURSELVES, WITH INNOVATIVE IDEAS, MAINTAINED WITH THEIR OWN MONEY. Mana tak boleh. I think this attitude amongst our ministers, with spending millions of rakyats money is more for the kickbacks they will receive than to actually see something productive come out of it. THIS IS WHAT YOU CALL TAK PAKAI OTAK.

I would like the readers to calm down and think. I do have a small point to raise to my fellow Malaysians.

I ask everyone to read the article and the comments from the top to the bottom, now I ask you this question, are you Malaysian? or are you MALAY, CHINESE, INDIAN, SIKH, DAYAK, BIDAYU, DUSUN, NEGRITO dan lain lain.

Look at ourselves, how we are insulting each other, bertaubat lah semua, calm down, don't let the pariah corrupt politicians, immaterial of which ever race make your blood boil. what for? Kalau besok berlaku kacau bilau, baguskah? All the foreign investor lari keluar, factory tutup, mata wang kita memang akan jatuh, business slow down atau kena tutup, kita kena buang kerja, nanti macam mana nak beli makan utk keluarga.

WHAT IS HAPPENNING HERE IS ALL SENDWARA AND BORIA, I come from the generation that went through may 13, I have seen families of all races devasted, malay, chinese indians, eurasians, sikhs dll, Don’t forget there is no insurance coverage for WAR OR RIOTS.
You think besok kalau jadi another may 13, your house kena bakar your anak kena bunuh, bini and daughter kena rape, ada insurance kah. will money bring back your agony, where will the culprits like this AHMAD GUY BE WHEN kacau bilau berlaku, guarantee you he will be overseas, this is the way of the crooks, liars, cheaters, conman, corrupters. OR THEY WILL BE HIDING BEHIND STONE WALLS with a lot of body-guards. WHILE THE KUNCHU2 MAT REMPIT AND GANGSTERS GO AND CREATE PROBLEMS and mayhem.
I ask you one question, when you watched the Olympics recently, when our MALAYSIAN BADMINTON PLAYER WAS PLAYING, WERE YOU SUPPORTING HIM?, AS A MALAYSIAN?, AS A CHINESE?, WHICH ONE, MISBUN SIDEK IS HIS COACH, WHEN THEY HUGGED, WAS THERE DISGUST IN YOUR THOUGHTS OR SORROW FOR THE LOSS, to our COUNTRY OUR FLAG.

OR for that matter THE OLDER GENERATION WHO USED TO SUPPORT OR STILL SUPPORT THE MALAYSIAN FOOTBALL TEAM OR HOCKEY TEAM, ARE YOU SUPPORTING THE Malay player only, chinese player, indian player????? siapa??? OR THE MALAYSIAN TEAM.
I used to support the Malaysian team during the time of TITANS, HEROS, OUR GIANTS, yes folks when we actually had a football team worth supporting , with legends like MOKHTAR DAHARI, SOH CHIN ANN, SANTOKH SINGH, ARUMUGAM- SPIDERMAN, I THINK OF THOSE DAYS with nostalgia, we laughed, screamed, cried our hearts out, and when we carried the MERDEKA CUP AFTER , beating , Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and heard the NEGARAKU, WE ALL SANG IN PRIDE, KITA SEMUA TEPUK DADAH KITA sebagai ORANG MALAYSIA.
The question I ask all of you and especially the Pariah Corrupt (who can't seem to get arrested or charged for corruption)BN POLITICIANS, who did you cheer for during all those football games, the chinese player-kah, indian player-kah, singh player kah, or the malay player and of course all the kaum lain lain,? IF THOSE PLAYERS HAD KEPALA LIKE WHAT HAS BEEN WRITTEN HERE THIS DAY, WE SURELY WOULD NEVER HAD BEEN A GOOD FOOTBALLING NATION IN THE 70s and early 80s,.
I plus a lot of people used to support the Bn, for A VERY VERY LONG TIME, but until I opened my eyes and started to see the corruption, under table money, exploitation of religion for political purposes, and nothing seems to happen to these politicians. I don’t see any changes in bn, it is a corrupt regime which will try to stay in Power by hook, crook or even bersumpah atas KORAN. Macam ni pun boleh berlakukah? WHO or WHAT is more insulting, exploitation of religion for political gain? MENGAPA, Don’t we have the courts CIVIL AND SHARIAH?
IN EVERY RELIGION WE ARE ALL TAUGHT THAT THIEVES In every religion We are all taught that stealing is wrong, and society demands thieves ,the corrupt and crooks SHOULD BE PUNISHED and shunned, but in Malaysia it has become a badge of pride, HOW MUCH UNDERTABLE MONEY GUA DAPAT, ALWAYS GUA, GUA, SAYA,SAYA,SAYA.
WHOSE FAULT IS all this, is it the politicians? judges? police? AG? AGUNG? SULTANS? SIAPA?
I say we are all at fault, for allowing this to happen, for not TELLING THE CORRUPT, RASCIST, PARIAH POLITICIANS, that Malaysians yang berbagai kaum, agama dan ajaran DON'T WANT THE CORRUPT TO RULE US, what we are hearing today is BORIA AL SENDIWARA PROPOGANDA by a bunch of looser
SO take a minute and think, IF KACAU BILAU BERLAKU, MAY 13-lah, potong sini, cincang sana, SIAPA MENANG?????,
    MELAYU? CHINA? INDIA? Dll?
Or will THE WINNERS BE THE HANTU-SYAITAN, crooks who are bankrupt of ideas, they only know one thing, how to be crooks. Nothing else. SO YOU DECIDE, kalau nak maki-paki ataupun pakai otak, shout intolerable rubbish at each other or to calm down and ask yourself this question,
WHY NOW? WHO WINS? WHO GAINS?
YOU OR THE CROOKED PARIAH POLITICIANS.

  62. On a very salient point but off topic I have read all kinds of comments about whats happening with the AHMAD CONTROVERSY.

    Dear Rocky,

I think this is a fabulous product, or service and should be promoted and encouraged. I don't think i have seen anything of this kind in this part of the world, well done whoever is doing this.

On that note too, I believe you owe Azalina, and her ministry an apology for your mistake. I don't think you want to follow in Kali's footsteps by not admitting your mistake and not apologising for it.

One can cause a lot of damage to oneself and others by publishing something based purely on hearsay.

    Do the right thing bro.

  76. Something is missing in this post, a link to the source. I agree with the comments above that your blog should be objective enough to include a link to the original article at least, to be fair.

If the RM36mil is really for a webtv/3G project, it's still way too much to be spending unless Tourism Malaysian plans on developing a google map + street view system and plots the best route from point A to point B. And how about 24/7 live videos set up at main attractions? But see, we don't know.
