    bru,

it should be aptly renamed as national disservice ...

singapore & taiwan also has the same program way b4 Malaysia but it seems all this problem is only peculiar to Malaysia where it has more people comparatively to Singapore and almost the same ratio to Taiwan ?!

    Semanggol NS camp under quarantine
    By Raslan Baharom

TAIPING: The Kerian district health office has placed a national service camp in Semanggol, near here, under quarantine.

At least 10 of its 300 trainees have been warded at the Taiping Hospital over the past few days while 80 others are being treated at the camp for an outbreak of a yet-to-be identified fever.

With the quarantine, it is learnt that all the trainees, who were supposed to return home for their weeklong break from yesterday to May 14, have to remain in the camp pending the outcome of the result of their blood tests.

A parent of one of the trainees tipped reporters here about the quarantine after his son, who was supposed to be at a bus terminal yesterday morning to return home, failed to turn up.

When he went to the camp, named Kem PLKN Jiwa Murni Semanggol, Thursday, he was barred from entering and was told by a staff member that the camp was under quarantine.

State Health, Environment and Human Resources Committee chairman A. Sivanesan confirmed that the NS camp had been placed under quarantine for the past few days.

He said that based on feedback from health officials in Bagan Serai and state health director Datuk Dr Ahmad Radzin Ahmad Mahir, there was an outbreak of fever the past four days.

“I was told that 10 of the trainees have been warded and 80 others are receiving treatment for fever at the camp.

“The health department has assigned an investigation team and blood samples have been taken from the affected trainees and sent for verification.

“Dr Ahmad Radzin assured parents that there is no reason for them to be overly alarmed,” said Sivanesan, adding that he planned to visit the camp to get a clearer picture of the situation.

“If the situation permits, I may be going there tomorrow,” he said.

I have always against this National Service camp and I believe there is a good proven method to improve our youth's racial integration

the only way is to put them together since their kiddie days, maybe aged 2,3 years old. the so-called Sekolah Wawasan is the only solution to these racial things.

but sadly some people felt they have to protect their 'specifications', thus choose to go against Sekolah Wawasan and its ideologies, without even looking properly what that is.

then come this National Service. What would u expect from a 3 months stint? Those boys/ girls are already blended with everything for the past 16-17 years and u expect them to wash those away in....3 months?

i would not call national service a joke because its najib's idea to improve our racial integration. at least he got an IDEA

but you guys, bashing everything on the floor these days, are not even giving anysort of idea. i will imagine the heat will be adding more to the existing ones particularly after RPK's arrest.

going back to the topic, someone should do something very fast.

    Funny...

Everyday, do you know how many teenagers die in road accidents, drowning, bitten by poisonous snake, or by other natural causes?

And we don't simply accuse road, snake, river or anything that matters for the cause of their death.

Death can occur anywhere, even if they are not in national service, when the time come, it will happens.

  18. Anonymous and others,

After reading your post on national service, I wanted to put my two cents in.

You said that death does not wait for anyone. However, what about death in a place where there are lots of sins happening. From what I have uncovered and discovered as I am one of those young enough to be in the NS generation, most of the free time is spent by being with boyfriends and girlfriends in the NS camp. This has not been leaked out yet as they may be some sort of cover up. Imagine your sons and daughters having intimate moments in a place where you thought it is safe? I may be old fashioned but this is Muslims we are talking about. Shouldn't the camp have some sort of regulations?

Another failure of the NS is that it has been structured to act like some sort of summer camp. I have heard from my Singaporean friends regarding this comment. We would not get trainees who could be expected to defend their countries as NS has been structured that way. It was implemented to make sure that National Unity will be preserved. How cunning is that? After the government failed in their education policies, they are merely shifting into another avenue where more cash is available.

I am currently studying in Australia, and it is really diverse in here. There are a lot of ethnics (not races), but the situation is stable and it is almost a fair go for every Australian National. There is no NS or any integration bullshits around. How have they done that? I wonder how.

Now another matter that has occurred. I wonder how Kelab Umno Luar Negara obtained their funds? It seems that their funds are aplenty. How does Umno obtain their funds? Please clarify this to me so that I would not feel cheated. Thanks

  21. I am a heavy smoker for the past 25 years. I remembered one day, an energetic friend of mine, much younger than me, came to see on me and we had a very nice chat. The next I heard, a few months later, he died while playing rugby. In another case, another junior of mine a feastful dinner with before he left for UK for his studies. A year later, I heard he died on the rail way tracks in London when he was pushed by accident. Every day we hear about deaths by accident especially those on motorcycles even when they wear helmets. We can go on and on giving examples.

I am most grateful that Allah has not taken my life away; I am alive because it is not timely for me to go yet.

The truth of the matter, Death waits for no one when the Angel of Death comes to take his/her soul away. Oh you believers, we recite the Al Fatihah to the deceased and we expressed condolences to the aggrieved family in their moments of trail and tribulations. Allah knows better.

i am an ex-trainee of the national service program and i will always treasure my experience . no doubt this is a result of barisan's innovation but it has many advantages , that come with certain drawbacks at the same time . but the main question to ask is whether the good outweights the bad . personally , national service is a great program for the youths . both physically and mentally . it is sad to see casualties and all kinds of problems arise from the program , but do remember that those trainees have the right to be exempted if they have any form of medical history . the consideration that the NS department gives towards exemption is pretty lenient i must say . all in all this program serves to be a good eye opener for those who have been chosen . it is unfair to judge just based on the negatives of this program . i am confident that if an ex-trainee like me is asked about the experienced gain from NS , it will always be priceless .

is this a national death camp for our youth? Lee Lam Thye and the administration of the national service program has yet to give the rakyat an indebt report and explaination of all the deaths, rape and other trajedies that has beset camps since it began.

the rakyat demands a detailed report without further secrecy and concealment.

the program is riddled with unprofessionalism and instructors are themselves selected on an ad-hoc basis. rapes, unprofessional training methods, inappropriate medical facilities and abuse of camp inmates have made it the horror spectacle of the decade.

stop passing the buck, stop blaming everyone else. take a good look at the system and bring to justice those responsible for the sudden demise of these precious young lives that would have made a difference.

Bro, You are right. Let's halt this NS thing. The only way the people in power are reluctant to do so is the benefits they probably reap from keeping the NS alive. This includes:

    a) Supplies
    b) Logistics
    c) Daily Direct Salaries
    d) Unseen expenses

However, to parents who lose their children in the name of National Service (heck, they are not even soldiers!), they have been robbed more than any of the above put together.

4)How much does the progranmme cost?
    5)Where do the payments for
NS programme go to? Who benefits?
6)Why are kids dying within the camps?
7)What is the state of health care within the camps?
8)Who takes responsibility if kids die?
9)Are parents compensated if their kids die?

If there are too many uncertainties or negatives associated with the questions above, ABOLISH the programme!

I dun really agree we accuse the road for the death... we need to understand this :

on the road.. is the driver who control the car.. if he/she speeding.. that is his problem.

in the NS.. we dun control it.. we merely 'have' to go, its a 'forcing' factor. When u ask people to go, then is your responsibility not talking bout death happen everywhere and its coincident.. cos i never really hear any like this in Taiwan or Singapore.

If i ask the driver to speed, then i can blame the road.

To those who are bashing Rocky, saying that he is against National Integration, integration should begin when we are young. Children's minds are moulded from a young age. It should start at Year 1. It's very difficult change someone's views when they are 18 - that too in 3 months. 3 months doesn't improve integration. Using guns does not improve integration. I am a Child-of-the-Earth first. My ethnicity and religion are immaterial. That's what I teach my children too. My children did not know their ethnicity until they went to school and learnt Moral & found out that they are compartmentalised, such as Chinese are Buddhists, Indians are Hindus which is actually wrong. I had to tell them Chinese can be Buddhists, Taoists, Christians, Muslims or any religion which they believe is true.

'Best la PLKN.Bodoh sape yg tak suka.Bila ujung minggu nak nak kalo ada cuti umum, tak ramai penjaga dlm kem.Dierang pakat2 amek cuti tinggalkan 2-3 orang je jaga kem. Masa tu la kite happening .Lepak2 dgn pakwe.Yang dulu kat sekolah skema konon masuk sana pon gedik jugak.Kite tak main la budak2 sekolah ni.Abang2 askar macho2 tu. Tau takpe.'
I felt a cold rush for a moment and said to myself ..never will I send my daughters even if I have to go to jail for it.
Now if we can remember..the PLKN was implemented during the height of the lepak, bohsia ,gangsterism etc problems in schools. It was supposed to inculcate discipline ,moral values, patriotism blah blah blah...oh dear!!! (sigh)

what is the purpose of our NS? when it was introduced, somebody said it was for our country's defence, just like Singapore's NS.

but then somebody else pointed out that there were no firearms training and so how can it be for defence? then somehow they 'changed' the purpose to 'national integration'.

the thing is, has anybody showed HOW our NS can improve national integration?

what are the key parameters? more interracial marriages? reduction in racial clashes?

how do we even begin to know whether NS is achieving its so called objectives?

this NS was pushed through without proper planning: there is no medical checkup prior to joining so nobody knows if the kids are healthy or have any allergies etc. even after years of implementation, there are still no doctors stationed at the camps to monitor the health of the kids. and what of the so called trainers' qualifications?

if those in power are really serious and sincere, why don't they put THEIR kids in this NS?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Anonymous10:04 am

Have yet to understand the point of dragging city kids and training them in an impractical means of warfare.
What can one learn in 3 months? 3 months in a secluded camp hardly counts for being a service to the nation. It stands out alot more as a government funded summer camp with the core purpose of creating jobs for the people providing the services.

If such training is required, at very least it should be done closer to the city and perhaps with alot less "boot camp" style that has caused alot of pointless deaths.
Jungle warfare is out of date.

The program itself can exist as a 1-3 year commitment from those interested. But its really pointless to pull random youths together for 3 months in the name of national unity. Government has to stop trying to blend all the races together.

We've already reached a solid level of peaceful coexistance in the way we chill and hang out. Don't fix something that's not broken.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It is actually good money running the camps. Figures heard is up to 2 million per session per camp. Each year have 3 sessions. Who are the owner of these camps? Even royalties have a stake.

Saya sokong pendapat saudara badul ...

  53. I have been against the Malaysia Version of National Service from the start itself. It is not a well thought out program that could provide a safe environment for our young ones.

I know people in defense of the NS will use arguments like death occurred everywhere, so it's unfair to single out NS. But these people have conveniently ignore the fact that death in NS are pretty much avoidable. The question they forgot to ask is that would these deaths be occurring if there were no NS in the first place?

Then there are people shifting the blames to the parents, citing that they should have done thorough medical check-up first before coming to the National Service. What hogwash! How could you shift such responsibility from the NS camp to that of the parents? The simple fact that once a teenager is selected in the NS he/she could not turned it down have indicated that the NS camp have the authority over the will of the trainee, and common sense and natural justice should dictate that such power should come with the responsibilities that the NS Camp be conducting thorough medical check-up on all trainees and that they should provide a safe environment for the trainee.

Sadly, this is not the case in Malaysia. What make the whole NS thing even worse is that there seems to be no sense of loss, and remorsefulness on the deaths of someone's son and daughters happening in the NS Camp. All I see is business as usual.

For those who continue to support the NS program let me ask you this question:"What if the one that dies is your son/daughter?"

Something very seriously wrong. I am worried for my kids if they are called to NS. We will have sleepless nights until they return home after NS safely. Hope that they will cancel the NS until they sort things out. This is really scary.

Really angry to read about another death and is Lee going to shed crocodile tears again? This death is not just another statistics like what ex-trainee commented "but the main question to ask is whether the good outweights the bad." What if it was your sibling or child? When so many companies can successfully implement 'Zero Defect' and 'Zero Accident' policies why can't it be done for the NS camps? Cakap tak serupa bikin. whispering9

NS is good in many ways : for integrating society, giving the young a sense of being wanted by their motherland, country security, physical improvements, self improvement and many other areas.
The problem (i think) in current NS that is resulting in deaths is that there is no medical checks done prior for the trainees, unlike for other full-time forces. This medical check must be made compulsary and borne by the government(tax payers). The clinics/hospitals near the vicity of NS camps must be assuared with qualified doctors (with specific medical qualification to meet general teenagers type of sickness)and adequate infrastructure, this includes (ambulances, hospital beds, etc).
In summary the NS system must be improved, not thrown out the window.
This is our motherland and sometimes we have to sacrifice for her. But at same, we must also ensure that all possible requirements to safe guard our children are in place.

"

this is a joke! the reason the writer quoted this means our education system is big big failure. it should be schools that nurture and cultivate integration, not so called this summer camp with another rakyat's expense. worse is it jeopardizes some other ppl studies and create sense of unfairness among the youth who is and isn't selected. singapura, korea and taiwan have solid reasons to for NS, and it applies to "ALL" guys, do you expect girls to carry m16 and throw grenade !

yahoo.com.auAnother life has been snuffed out for nothing. Another example of 'Mati Katak' (dying in vain). How many more deaths will it take before the cursed Basawi regime scraps the National Service. Already we hear of a NS Camp under quarantine due to a mystery illness.

To the macho NS graduates who are heaping praises about the program, just count yourself lucky that you are not part of the statistics. To parents who praise the NS for making their kids disciplined, you ought to be ashameed of yourselfs as parents because you have all failed as parents when you need the state to teach your kids discipline. To those who say it is Fate or Takdir when death comes a calling, you are wrong because the NS is a flawed program. I bet some of these kids would be with us today if not for the NS.

To Lee Lam Thye, be a man and say to the world that the NS is a failure. If you don't have the guts at least quit. To the Badawi regime, especially Najib, God will judge you for all the deaths!

    Bro,

to me, the program is good if it is properly managed. the problem is, it is managed by wrong bunch of people who put money above all things.

They don't really care what those children eat as long as they can make money out of this program. This is not the first food poisoning case.

Somebody must be responsible and answerable to this incident. dont justify this negligence with stupid reasons.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I do not fault the government.

The government is, after all, a product of utter stupidity and arrogance.

The one I fault is, however, the people of Malaysia, and especially, THE PARENTS !!!

Please ask yourself: What is the chief duty of being a parent?

No, not earning money so that your kids can buy the latest Nokia cellphone, although that would be nice.

No, not loving your kids so much that they become spoilt brats.

The #1 duty for being a parent is to PROTECT your children from ALL HARM.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen: The objective of Being Parents 101 is to understand what the fuck you need to do as a parent ---- TO PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN !!!

So what are the Malaysian parents do?

After 19 deaths or so, the Malaysian parents are STILL sending their children away, for 3 whole months, to participating in a program that is totally DEVOID OF ANY MEANING WHATSOEVER.

No, please do not give me any bullshit excuses like "But they are going to sue US!"

I ain't gonna listen to bullshit no more !!!

Do you people understand what is "CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE" ???

If not, please read up, in wikipedia or somewhere else on the Net.

What we truly need in this country, is for our people to start practicing CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE !!!

One example is, STOP SENDING YOUR KIDS TO DIE FOR NEEDLESS CAUSE !!!!

So the government gonna sue, SUE LAH !!!

Make my day, man. If they gonna sue me, I gonna sue them back.

It's time for me to say a big "FUCK YOU !" to Najis Mongolia and his cohorts.

    Please pardon my "french" !

    A typical Malaysian malaise.

We always become emotional and irrational. Let's be objective. The NS programme has brought immense benefits to the participants. Don't let isolated incidents cloud our judgement. Do we have to close the NS programme when death occurs.

If we follow this simplistic reasoning, wouldn't it be more logical to ban motorcycles on the roads and highways as every year thousands of motorcyclists lost their lives. We should also ban swimming as hundreds of lives are lost each year. Ban lorries and coaches from roads and highways as many passengers have died. Close all beaches as many have been swept away by the waves. Also ban cycling as many more have lost their lives. We should also ban sports as many died young due to sports related activites. And this list can grow longer.

All the above have cost loss of billions of ringgit to the nation. And griefs to thousands of families. But yet they are not bothered to call for a ban. However, when death does occur at NS camp due mainly to medical reasons, they start to jump and call for scrapping of the NS programme. What crap.

NS TRUTH nothing but the truth.

I got this eye-witness truth from a youth who had just recently come back from NS Camp.

    1. The present NS camp is a muchx2 watered down version of the earlier ones.75% of each day is indoor moral lessons and waiting time for roll-cal(5-to-6 times a day)
    2. Polarisation is rife in the camp.
    3. Feedback forms which are truthfully completed go missing and the identified trainees are ask to fill another one which hopefully is in favour of the camp co-ordinators.
    4. The food that is served is so spicy that even one who is used to having chilli padi with his/her daily meal suffers diarrhoe so many times throughout the camp duration.

So, open your eyes(don't just rely on the reports that are submitted to you), whoever it is that came up with this stupid time wasting "idea???"

    ReplyDelete
  74. Anonymous3:24 pm

This National service trainee complained of an upset stomach after having chicken rice lunch in Geo Kosmo Camp, then passed away nine hours later. I believe something is not right with the food. My bf's brother is one of the trainee in Geo Kosmo Camp. He found a spring from spanner in his chicken rice (in the chicken to be precise)during lunch. He told the food caterer and they asked him to keep quiet and don't complain to the officers. Looking at what happened now, I should now complain to the authorities.

Another death at the NS camps. When will there be accountability? Only then will the operators and administrators of the camps will be more responsible. If a death is simply handled with a mere "investigation" that is long winded and blames no one, when will the responsible ones ever be brought to justice?

The ministry in-charge must be accept responsibilty for this tragedy, and this isn't the first time either.

Najib, as Defence Minister whose ministry is the supervising ministry of the NS Department has blood on his hands! What has he done about it? How many more deaths must there be before this stupid NS program is scrapped for good?

I am all for unity and racial integration among youths but come on, that's not the real reason for setting up the camps is it? If the NS is merely operating to finance some power hungry woman's ridiculous botox injections and face lifts then I dare say it's time we disbanded the whole program. The deaths just don't do justice to the program no matter how well conceived the original idea was.

Also, the woman (who too has blood on her hands) benefitting from the NS programs looks like she has had enough botox and face lifts to last a lifetime. Anymore, and she may look as ridiculous as michael jackson. Or has she already?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Let us all achieve real national integration - collectively boycott this crazy scheme.

For the amount of rakyats' money they have sunk into this death-camp programme which would have made even Josef Mengele blush with pride, each youth could have been given a handphone, a computer and a ticket to the next Stoke City playoff.

That would have been more productive than to give our youths an appointment with death.

How many of those square-cock ministers have sent their children to this national bullshit program? Just name one. Najib, huh? What about that SIL, or even Hisham the ex-kerisman? They're young enough to attend. All they do is talk and then expect parents to send their children to play this game of russian roulette.

What are they trying to achieve? Another 20 deaths before they stop? Even one strand of hair of one of our youths is already too much, what more the tragic and completely avoidable death of so many of our dears.

If they are to die, let them decide how and when, not so young, not in one of the hairbrained politikus umno schemes.

Enough is enough lah. Stop this shit/

do you know each time they open fire for recreation purpose, taxpayer need to pay for the bullets! do you like to hear taxpayer money is spent on youth open fires with m16 to shoot cans - just to gain shooting experience ?

rocky, from your post you are urging NS to be scraped because there are kids dying of stomach upsets?

What about kids falling sick in schools after eating canteen food? Should schools be closed down on this reason?

The problem here is not about NS, but it is about food safety. Things like food poisoning happen anywhere even at your own home, so instead maybe try suggesting a better food safety system being implemented in NS camps instead.

I know a handful of people who were in NS and they feel they have benefitted a whole lot from it, so it's not all that bad.

Here's a thought.... could it be, the personnel who manage these camps who arent fit to administer rather than the program itself.

We all feel extremely sad and disturbed by all these negligence year in year out, illness, accidents and deaths.

Shouldnt the authorities take responsibility to terminate them ie Camp Administrators or better, Charge them, make them liable for any mishaps/accidents on their watch? Generals, Majors, who cares, bring to court and charge them.

I'm certain everyones is tired of the same ole explanations, its time to make these drastic change.

No more sweeping it under the carpet, take action and give the rakyat some peace of mind that their kids are in an environment thats secured and managed by proffessionals.

    ReplyDelete
  84. ok there are quite many people here who support the NS and some don't.
Perhaps the government should remove the mandatory requirement for the selected kids to join NS.
Instead, the programme should only open to those parents who wants their son/daugther to be in the programme.
And get them sign the paper 'in the event bla bla bla.. the government will not be responsible'.
So if any more deaths happen, at least the government won't get the hot potato again.

Useless quarantine, they will come up with some XXXX excuses.

Just leave those diagnose to doctors instead of paramedic.

  118. Tak kan sorang mati semua nak di batalkan. Kamu kan pandai. Bagilah idea cara nak baiki.

Sekarang tak habis habis dengan my righ, our right, we have marginalized WTF?

Kata Engku Aziz " In my column last Sunday, I suggested introducing national military service to redress the racial imbalance in our police and armed forces.

Those under-represented ethnic groups that have been vocal about their rights will, I am sure, welcome this opportunity to exercise their inalienable rights to serve their country alongside other Malaysians. Maintaining the peace and security of our country must be a shared responsibility.

A retired Malaysian Armed Forces major of Chinese extraction, who served the nation with pride and loyalty, emails me to say that there is no better or more natural environment to integrate our diverse races and cultures than that of the armed services.

An 18-month stint would bring about greater understanding of other cultures and traditions. The major also tells me that never in his entire service did he feel in any way marginalised because he was from a minority race.

Many of my classmates were "conscripted" - a large number of them Chinese and Indians - into the police jungle squads. One of them even won the George Medal, the highest civilian honour for exceptional courage (the civilian equivalent of the Victoria Cross).

I am sad to say, there were also some fair weather Malayans who took the slow boat to China, India and Ceylon to avoid the call-up.

When this was scrapped not long afterwards, a friend who had decamped to Ceylon returned, and was among the first to claim his "right" to a government overseas teacher training scholarship, which he took without any sense of shame."

    Good write up from Sun

    Problem? Just outsource it
    Terence Fernandez

IT’S AMAZING how in the midst of tragedy, some people can find a golden nugget. Three days after yet another National Service (NS) trainee died while in the custody of NS officials, enterprising individuals have realised that a very profitable business opportunity has revealed itself.

With the announcement of the deputy prime minister on Saturday that the government will outsource health check-ups for the 90,000-odd teenagers that are called up for NS training annually, it is a foregone conclusion that the rent-seekers will be queuing outside the offices of the NS Training Department and the Defence Ministry hoping to pitch for the contract that promises millions in returns.

While the family of 18-year-old Too Hui Min comes to terms with the death of their daughter of something as treatable as constipation, the well-connected, enterprising and shrewd are falling over each other to ensure that they clinch the deal.

They are hoping to strike it rich at the expense of Hui Min and the 15 other children who died during training for various ailments and accidents since the NS scheme was introduced four years ago.

For those not very business savvy, you don’t have to scratch your heads to figure out how to compose a proposal.

Just photo-copy or re-work the previous health check schemes that have emerged in recent times – Fomema for foreign workers and the shelved E-Kesihatan for commercial vehicle drivers and attendants. Make sure you appoint a Yang Berhormat or former NS Training Council member or retired ministry official as your chairman or director, as this will facilitate access to the top brass who will ultimately decide if you get the job. Cook up a catchy name like NSihat or F-Kesihatan and impose a fee of RM50 on the parents who will be compelled to take their kids to a panel clinic certified by you. Any clinic which would want to be a panel of NSihat will have to pay RM100 as "joining fee". Charge another RM80 for "administrative fees". To refill the coffers make sure you also impose an annual "membership" fee of RM100 on these panel clinics.

And don’t forget, of the RM50 that hapless parents pay for their children’s check-ups, you get RM20. Multiply this by 30,000 trainees, and you make a cool RM600,000 per batch of NS trainees. And there are three batches a year which brings the total to about 90,000 medical check-ups. Sembilan puluh ribu darab RM20? You do the math!

Instead of tweaking the requirement for medical check ups so that thorough examinations are done before admission into the camp, currently the onus is on parents to fill out a checklist ala an insurance policy application, and obtain a doctor’s signature at the bottom of the form. This signature, as I have discovered from some parents, is not compulsory. The lucky ones are later discovered to be unfit for the rigorous activities and sent home. The not-so-lucky ones return in a coffin.

What happened to the promise of a medical officer in every camp? Why are camp commandants so complacent about the medical needs of the trainees, so much so that 15 of the 16 deaths are due to delayed medical treatment?

It seems that "outsourcing" seems to be the miracle solution for every flaw in the administration. By introducing privatisation from buying jets to supplying nasi lemak, the decision-makers think they are killing two birds with one stone – addressing weaknesses and sharing the economic pie in the spirit of the New Economic Policy (NEP). From less-than-satisfactory living conditions, low quality food, poorly trained and abusive camp trainers and as we have sadly experienced, poor healthcare, the complaints are legion. It is about time that the whole programme is reviewed or scrapped.

To say that the programme is compulsory as it helps to forge unity among the various races is laughable and an insult to one’s intelligence. What can you achieve in three months, where 12 years of national schooling have failed?

Compelling parents to release their children into the care of the NS Training Department for three months when the department itself cannot guarantee their well-being, is akin to using the law to take hostage of our children.

Instead of suspending the NS training scheme until all flaws are ironed out, the government wants to push ahead with an ill-conceived, poorly thought out and profit-oriented policy where the pawns and ultimate victims are our children. For whose benefit is it for really? One begs an answer.

Terence will charge a patent fee on anyone who steals his ideas for profit. He is reachable at terence@thesundaily.com

  121. You know what? Dont think the Gov will scrap this shit. They called it a camp to strengthen racial unity and shit, but really, makes you wonder what they're actually doing behind the scenes. You know that ad they show on TV? Where everyone is happy and stuff? Are they really happy there? It's all propaganda. Actually, it will be my turn to go soon. Next year, to be exact. But fret not, and screw ISA. If I make it out alive, I will tell the world how EVERYONE was treated in NS. Secrets will be revealed.

i am wondering....if medical check up is done..and the child is certified FIT ..... if and if the child dies bcos of a burst appendix which was treated TOO LATE by the plkn staff....is MR ROAST-MAH going to say that this child had an EXISTING appendicitis waiting to burst...and thus plkn TAK BERTANGGUNG JWB ATAS KEMATIAN YG TAK DPT DI ELAKKAN ?What is so obvious here is they are implying that each death is always due to PRE-EXISTING diseases that the child have. If a full medical check up is to be done , i suppose it has to be really thorough and they have to list out what are the diseases that should make the child not eligible for plkn...?so..is ASTHMA included in the list ? why shouldnt it be? acute asthmatic attacks can be fatal !! what about SEVERE ALLERGY ? The list goes on...!! it doesnt rectify the problem. The whole problem is that this programme was done hastily...without proper plan from day one...our beloved kids are treated like GUINEA PIGS...experimented as the programme continues...medical back-up incase of emergencies are not thought of at all...there is a gross breakdown of communication between plkn staff n parents as can be seen from those cases who died...SO WHY ARE THEY NOT
GOING TO HALT THESE PROGRAMME ? LIVES ARE LOST HERE FOR GOODNESS SAKE ?!!! YOUR GUESS IS AS GOOD AS MINE............

HOHOHO EN LEE !! 24 HRS ?!! DO YOU KNOW THAT PERFORATED APPENDIX...SEVERE ACUTE ASTHMA...PERFORATED GASTRIC ULCER...aiyah ! the list is rly long !...any of these can kill a patient in LESS THAN 24 HRS !!

lee lam thye said it is the STANDING OPERATING PROCEDURE, (quoting what he said in nst may 13 2008...)TO BRING THE CHILD TO HOSPITAL IF THEY DUN RESPONSE AFTER 24HRS BEING TREATED AT THE NS CAMPS .

ohoho...so now i know why those unfortunate kids die soon after being sent to hospital !!!!!!!

until and unless mr lee lam thye
can arrange to have medical doctors on standby duty at every camps thru-out each 3 monthly NS stint , juz like what is done during the muslims pilgrimmage to mecca , i doubt any bloody medical check up will serve any purpose.

we are talking about human lives , young malayians , our children and now i am wondering what else can parents do so that our child will not become the next victim.

i can never forgive myself should anything happen to my beloved kid while doing the ns stint...i would not be able to forgive myself especially with the present scenario where we have a constant number of about 4 to 5 deaths during NS every year, Its frightening knowing that the child you send for NS might not come back alive....4 to 5 deaths per year...so who is next ?

of course there are parents like EN FADZIL , above , who seemed to like NS programmes for his children...so why not allow parents like him to send their kids for national service ?

usually people have to pay big bucks to let their kids to have these kind of camps. mr lee may promote it on our MSM so that parents scramble to get a place for their kids to do NS.

isnt it better not to force it upon us..esp with the number of deaths that has occured?

mr lee lam thye...if i were u , i would have resigned immediately.

If a pupil died in school coz of food poisoning, should we ban school?

Someone got killed in road accident, should we ban roads and cars?

Plane crashes, should we ban them and airports?

A worker died in construction site, should we ban Contruction of buildings, houses, mosques, bridges?

Should we ban something if someone dies?

Are we becoming a bunch of over-reacting government watchdog?

Just asked those kids whether they enjoy the experience? Are we listening to them?

I know for sure most student would look forward to this outing.

It is unfortunate that these things happened. But that does not mean it cannot be improved.

In many human endeavor, failures, fatalities is just part of the process. And we learn from it.

If we ban everything that fails, we wont get where we are.

What are the chances of these kids experiencing camp & communal life, discipline, tollerance, outdoor activities etc without NS.

    MM

My daughter did her NS 2 years ago in Pahang.

She told me it was a waste of time. She didnt remember much about it now except how bad the food were , and marching in the hot sun.

If anybody falls sick usually its difficult to get the attention of the commandent in charge...usually the kids are brushed off and told to be tough. So my daughter was not surprised when she read about the circumstances of those who died...more often than not it is difficult to get those in charge to take them seriously whenever they complain of pain or being ill.

Racial intergration ? there is a great tendency for children
to flock together according to their races.I suppose this reflects that 11 years of schooling from std 1 to form 5 fails to integrate our children so there is little likelihood that a 3 month stint is going to do much anyway. I am glad my daughtry came back to us in one piece.

My son is in form 5 this year. I can honestly say that I am praying hard that he wont be called for NS.

    Dearest ano. ( 10:59 pm)

There is no harm if the program is halted for a while and reviewed thoroughly before being implemented again. We shouldn't continue it juz bcos the profit of running the program involves many parties , at the end of the day its the safety of the kids that is the most important.

    Any parents will willingly send
their kids for ns and infact many parents do send their kids to all kinds of motivational camps during school holidays. Mind you , those programs are not cheap .

Even for those programs where we have to pay , safety is the utmost importance in our minds.

The issue here is SAFETY. With a tract record of 4-5 deaths per year , any loving n responsible parents would be concerned n apprehensive.

Maybe not for YOU and EN MOHD FADZIL but it is a matter of huge concern for lots of parents INCLUDING ME.

It would have been better if parents have a CHOICE about this matter so that people like you can send your kids to do NS (and accept it if your kid die there as fated ).

If that is done then NS will not be an issue at all.
