Jeanne and Umno membership

Serani boleh? A recent Muslim convert sent me an sms asking me how was it that the Prime Minister's new wife, who is a Eurasian and not a Malay, could become an Umno member [read story here]. I could't answer the query so I forwarded it to a couple of die-hard Umno bloggers.
Any of you know?

di sabah ada cina yang jadi ahli umno jugak. tak kira lagi yang siam dan orang asli jadi ahli umno.

The answer is found in Usman Awang's poem "Melayu",

    Excerpts:

"Melayu di tanah Semenanjung luas maknanya:
Jawa itu Melayu, Bugis itu Melayu
Banjar juga disebut Melayu, Minangkabau memang Melayu,
    Keturunan Acheh adalah Melayu,
    Jakun dan Sakai asli Melayu,
    Arab dan Pakistani, semua Melayu
Mamak dan Malbari serap ke Melayu
    Malah mua’alaf bertakrif Melayu
    (Setelah disunat anunya itu)"

I dunno if Rocky remember or not when Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad spoke in Kelab Darul Ehsan, sometime in May, organised by one UMNO branch in Pandan and assisted by Gen-M. One of the man who asked Tun question was a elderly who ARROGANTLY REFUSED to give his name.

That guy is outright Chinese convert who goes around by the name of Mustapha Ong and he is an UMNO member!

I dunno how he is a member but today, he is an Exco of UMNO Veteran Club.

Does that means we all should convert and join umno in order to survive and make obscene amount of money from non-umnos? no more racism? but got umnoism rite? either you're umno or not? sounds like Bush!

    Inmine,

I suppose Datin Seri Jeanne is now a Malay because she is

    1. a Muslim
    2. She lives according to malay customs, pakai baju kurung & selendang and
    3. Speaks Bahasa Melayu.

So she is can be an Umno member.

this question occured to me when i saw the paper today.

The only criteria the first lady fulfills is that she is a Muslim.

But then, that wud entitle scores of non-malay muslims to become Umno members.

United Malay National Organisation becomes United Malaysian Nasional Organisation. Sounds about right eh?

BTW, Non-Malay and non-muslim Bumiputeras can join Umno ah?

I'm asking on behalf of the many Kadazans, Muruts, Melanaus, Bajaus, Dayaks, Ibans, Penans, Bidayuhs and the Peninsular based Mah Meri, Jakun Semai, Temiar dan lain lain.

  9. A good example of how confused the Malays are in this country.

Malay does not mean Islam, Islam does not mean Malay.

Sadly, only the Malays in Malaysia fail to differentiate between race and religion.

what a load of rubbish hi&lo...?!?

first is that racism thing. we can't run away from that one. it just within us. so, we have to sort that one very well, like old Malay proverb:

'menarik benang dalam tepong, benang tak putus, tepong tak berselerak..'

and the second is, we already took on the world. well, under Dr Mahathir, we even shook some British by the Raid, some Americans by shooting at their WMD blind-ness, and some Jewish that prompted the Anti-Semitic respon. It just under this new regime, we dive too much.

I dont know..maybe again, an old Malay proverb can explain.

    'Menyelam sambil meminom air'? whatever.

I'm sure the colonialists who came here married local Malays and not Eurasians who obviously were not in existence then. In fact, Eurasians would probably have more legitimacy as Umno members than Indian Muslims, don't you think?

  17. Malaysia shouldn’t run by race base parties
Though we live in harmony and prosperity
In our hearts we have no place to go
Perhaps some say sail on the boat
But this is our land our home

Because the BN government is fair
We have wools over our eyes
    The rich becomes richer
The poor has no way to go

    Membership to UMNO
    Brings out the millions
Less than 8% rule the majority
Year in year out the leaders make
The same recording to tell the people
Only BN can give you rights
    In this multi-racial country

    I say
Any party can do the rights
    BN or BA or AA

    Let the memberships be multi-racial
Or let it be 2 party systems
In this way unity of races
For the good of the country

As long as the race base party rules
There is discord and disharmony in anything we do
You read it in press statements
    You find it their writings
    Race is the true life
    But without a country
Then what is race, my friend?

    1. each of the major divisions of humankind > having distinct physical characteristics > racial origin of distinction > an ethnic group, a group descended from a common ancestor.
    2. a group of people or things with a common feature.

For the official definition of "a Malay" read the Federal Constitution and there should be no doubt that Jeanne Abdullah and other Muslim converts in Malaysia qualify if they fulfil the requirements.

For the status of the jawi peranakan a.k.a. mamak read "Images of the Jawi Peranakan of Penang" Chapter 1 Pages 14-18. Published by Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in 2004, the book is co authored by Halimah Mohd Said & Zainab Abdul Majid

  36. Anonymous11:06 am

Excellent question to bring up at this juncture in time Rocky. Sinmple truth of the matter is that this country, for some time now, has been going down the path of a transition from the "racial-isation" of politics to the "religion-isation" of politics, if you will. When you lack opportunities for advancement because of your birth name, race, religion - not a problem, simply convert to Islam and become an UMNO member and all's good. The benefits of course go beyond mere UMNO 'inspired' benefits - especially where one is trying to subvert civil law norms and dictates in relation to parental custody of the children of divorce; conversion to Islam allows the father to unilaterally convert the children and claim custody of them in a Syariah court where the non-Muslim mother does not even have locus standi.
As has been pointed out by other commenters, it is the Constituition definition of what/who a Malay is that causes this blurring of the clear distinction between race/ethnicity and religion - a blurring mind you, that carries great political mileage.

ok guys....after all i ve been on you'll side.....but then this is definitely huge question...i think we malay have to review back our policy on malay & bumi status.....i give you'll an scenario......1) UMNO denied a muallaf(old woman)membership that rise 7 children purely malay blood that very malay.......butumno seems to be very fleksibel depending on the state(indonesian) and person quality+qualification.....put it straight....my mom is chinese whom converted to islam(not malay)...when she 26(now she 60) have been denied umno membership in our living area......but then you can see an umno leader whom is originated from indonesian.....you may ask me....they born here....only their father from there......then my parents born here, and i born here......why my mom is denyable....umno means malay.......and my mom chinese mualaaf that practise this fourth perkara in perlembagaan malaysia.....the indonesian born malaysia...are they practising malay culutural...are they speak malay as they tongue language??????but they are even umno leader in certain are........i also know one person who is born in indonesia but umnow chief(member)....hellloooo.....UMNO shud change to UMINO-united malay-indo national org.........2(bumi status.......my mom again raise 7 chidren......im the youngest 27 years old.....appearently my dad passed away 10 years ago....so my mom take in charge whilst 4 of us havent finis study....you know my mom strugglke for what.....for her malay children......she have been denied from her family for more than 40 years...and she is alone in these 10 years...without my dad.......but then her bumi status is deniable whenever she want to buy house for her 7 malay children...and she have been deny from buy asb......but then sabah chinese is bumiputera status....what's going on with our law.....think of the scenario and please do something so UMNO wont be UMINO and bumi status privellege's is fairly distribute among us.....thanks to allah that ALLAH is most powerful in everything, today my mom still happy but i believe her heart torn apart but this stupid dilemma....please save our UMNO from UMINO....even now UMNO leader of my place..........pure malay...have been protecting an indonesian from my family-we malay family......can umno again clarified their identity.....not t o wooried umno member races...as long as they are islam...malaysian......speak malay......perfrom malay cultural....rather than islam....not malaysian....speak malay only to gain profit and never perform malay cultural......please....

UMNO sees itself as representing the Malays of Malaysia, although any Bumiputra (indigenous Malaysian, a category which includes people such as the non-Malay and usually non-Muslim Kadazan, Iban, Dayak, etc. of East Malaysia) may join the party. *taken of wikipedia*

Bumiputra status may join UMNO. And Datin Jeanne Abdullah is Portuguese-Eurasian and Portuguese people do have bumiputra status so do people with Thai blood.

To keep things simple, it is good to bear in mind, that there is a Head of State and there is a Head of Goverment. Sometimes, like in the US the same person is both, but in many countries the two positions are occupied by differant people.

The First Lady is the wife of the Head of State. In some countries, the Head of State is called 'President" while in others its it is the King( Thailand) or Queen( UK) who holds that office. In those countries that dont have royalty, the wife of the Head of State is called the first Lady while for those that have a monarchy, she is usually refered to as the queen. But status and protocol wise they are each others equivelant .So if in a country that has a king for a Head of state, and a PM as the Head of Goverment, then the equivelant position of First lady is the queen.

If the Head of State is a woman, like in the Philippines than the husband is refered to as the First Consort( if m not mistaken)

The Prime Minister is the Head of Goverment. Regardless of the actual powers that he weilds, he is never the Head of State. In Singapore the PM is almost all powerful, nonetheless its President is still the Head of State and the wife, the First Lady.If m not mistaken, in Brunei, the Sultan is both Head of state and head of goverment.

Hopefully this helps. But u better double check because for all u know, issues of protocol is dynamic and not static.

BTW the same should apply to State goverments- the governor is head of state while the CM is head of goverment.

According to the Federal Constitution, Malays are defined as those who pick their noses in public, who never wash their hands after using the toilet, hocking in a public sink, squatting on a toilet seat, speaking incessantly in front of food at any food stall, who like to give away things like their land to others, who never use dental floss, who throw food on the table where they eat especially restaurants, who does not know the meaning of the word love, who like to watch AF and other moronic television programme that involves Aznil the chief Moron, who like to dye their hairs from black or dark brown to blonde streak, and who is oblvious to the competitive world! Actually there are many more I just cannot do it anymore as I get depressed because I belong to that race although we did asked Minangkabau to be excluded from being the defrinition of the Malay race nad I guess we are stuck!
So there you are that is what being Malays is all about!

Why stop at Datin Seri Jeanne dear friends. I say let us now open UMNO to all Malaysians, which is what Datuk Onn Jaafar(God Bless His Soul) wanted us to do half a century ago. Datuk Onn was a man ahead of his time and he knows communal politics will not take Malaysia far against the challenges of the future. Now the PM can really make us leap into the future by turning UMNO into a United Malaysian National Organisation.

    Thank you Mat Rempit Hubris,Carthage.

Yes, to all my fellow Malaysian.. our first lady is DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong.

"Malaysia is a federal constitutional elective monarchy (Raja Berpelembagaan) The federal head of state of Malaysia is the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, commonly referred to as the King of Malaysia- Wikipedia"

That's why we can see all the envelopes that been used for any 'urusan rasmi' will have a printed "URUSAN SERI PADUKA BAGINDA" in bold!

The main stream media must be corrected. They are the one who started the idea of giving the first-lady title to PM's wife.

I'm just wondering, why didn't anybody from the goverment; who should know better about this 'mistake' to raise their voice and make a correction?

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Malaysians of Siamese descent prevalent in Perlis, Kedah, Northern Perak and Kelantan have been accepted as members of UMNO a long time ago.So are the Indian Muslims in Penang.(May I relate one hilarious incidence that took place in the early 80's. I was at the Amanah Saham Nasional office in Butterworth to register myself as a unitholder of the ASN scheme. Came a group of Indian Muslims with forms already filled up. The officer at the counter pleasantly informed the leader that the ASN scheme was only for Bumiputras. The leader disagreed, "Awatnya kami tak buleh melaboq dalam ASN? Awat, kami 'ni bukan Bumiputra ka? Tau tak, saya apa 'ni semua ahli UMNO tau?" The officer was taken aback and asked for time to consult his superior in KL. Then came the most interesting part. When the leader walked back to the group, they began their loud chatter. Guess what language they used? Tamil! I nearly burst out laughing but fortunately I could control myself). The constitution of UMNO is such that pribumis of Sabah can become UMNO members, although certain groups within the pribumis are not Malays, constitutionally speaking. The Portuguese community in Malacca can invest in the ASN/ASB schemes. I found out later the Penang Indian Muslims can invest in ASN/ASB. So going the other way round, the Eurasians or Seranis are eligible to be UMNO members. Since Jeane is a Serani, definitely she can become an UMNO member.

Anyway, what is the big deal? Dato Onn, the first UMNO president, was half Turkish. One of the former PMs has ancestral lineage that goes back to India. One former DPM and a former minister has Chinese mothers (half Chinese). Another former minister was complete Indian (meaning father and mother are Indians) and he is an UMNO member.

In Penang, the Indian Muslims are accepted as UMNO members, so are the Siamese in Perlis, Kedah, Northern Perak and Kelantan. Members of the Portuguese community from Malacca are also accepted as UMNO members. Since Jeane is a Serani, meaning half Malay, half European, definitely she is eligible to become an UMNO member.
