Criminalising War: The Role of CSOs

Civil Society Organisations.
I am forced to stay away from this year's International Conference to Criminalise War due to F&F (flu & fever) but I am able to follow the proceedings via blogs and the excellent coverage at mathaba.net.

The role of civil society to help end wars and conflicts is being discussed in depth. Surely, this will lead to a clarification of what civil society in Malaysia can do, rather than just a bonding exercise for like-minded people, and the growth of CSOs.

Read Civil Society as the united voice of the people against war.

    Dear Rocky,

Our elder statesman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has once against gathered the good citizens of the world to speak up against the war-mongers. It takes courage to do that. May he enjoy good health and many more years so that he can continue to fight.

The Criminalize the War forum has gathered momentum. I hope the Malaysian government under Datuk Najib will be responsive to the calls of the forum.

For years under Mahathir, Malaysia has voiced out against war and championed the South Africans against Apartheid, the Bosnians against genocide and ethnic cleansing, and the Palestines against the Israel-US-Britain axis.

The time has come for Malaysia to assume the same role again.

    Rocky,

What about the senseless and inhumane killing of innocent civilians in terrorist and suicide bombings in Pakistan and Iraq? Today alone another more than 100 people in Peshawar, Pakistan were blown up to bits by bombs planted by Islamic terrorists. Ordinary and defenceless muslims are being targeted and killed by bombs and suicide bombers carried out by fellow muslims in these countries While you are at it, why not organise a forum to denounce and criminalise such horrific and barbaric killings as well?

    Bro,

A harmless man by the name of Abdul Kahar was jailed for 10 years, fined RM16500 and given six strokes of the rotan for declaring himself a Rasul.

If at all, Kahar should have been sent to the psychiatrist and given a mental evaluation.

But where was Civil Society on this one? Where were the civil society groups? Within a few days the country has forgotten Kahar (well actually they never cared about him in the first place).

Bro, it is a happy day in hell when a whole country can close its eyes to a harmless man being sent to jail for his eccentricity.

Kahar never hurt anyone neither is he a threat to anyone. He feels he is a rasul - from his little house in Gombak, where he has probably bored his wife and family with his views. Does he deserve 10 years jail?

The same goes for Ayah Pin. Where were the Civil Society groups when goons razed his home with bulldozers and broke the little plywood houses the women lived in? Why the need to do that?

OK if they wanted to destroy his commune, then did anyone provide alternative housing to the people whose homes were destroyed? Where were the Civil Society groups on that one too? Perhaps still brushing up on their 'civil etiquette'?

Civil Society Groups should mean exactly that - folks who are civilised. Unfortunately I dont see much of that in our society. Here more often than not, civil society groups simply pander to whatever hypocrisy is dominant or is fashionable.

Let us all pray for wars to quickly cease
So that mankind can still possibly exist

  9. WARS ARE BAD AND MAKE US SAD WITHOUT DADS

Let us all declare that wars are bad
Since they only make human beings sad
Making children often to lose their dads
Let's ban all wars and not turn them into fads
