Nazri's 100-day gifts

Cab, school bus fares UP. Now some will say that the "discount" on toll, which was one of the 100-day gifts to the people from the PM last Saturday, is too good to be true.

Nazri Aziz, the Minister in the PM's Department, has announced that fares for taxi and school bus are up.

The starting fare for your cab ride from Aug 1 is RM3, a whopping 50% more!

KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 -- The new taxi fare rate will go up from RM2 to RM3 begining August 1, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohamad Nazri Abdul Aziz announced on Thursday.

And parents who rely on school buses to send their kids to school will have to fork out 30 per cent more from August 1. Those who can't afford it may look for non-air conditioned school buses.

This Nazi joker cannot do anything right lah.

Instead of improving taxi service, which is soooo bad, he go and increase the fares.

    Die lah.

After this you think other people won't increase their prices, ah?

Najib should just sack this bugger lah.

  5. bro. a few of taxi drivers i spoke to had a lot of respect for noh omar, vis-a-vis his predecessor and now successor(?). apparently, the 3000 individual permits issued recently was actually noh omar's idea during pak lah's administration. a case of susu punya lembu, sapi punya nama, it seems.

You can only get something for free from the Barsisan in a by-election. At all other times, you get something and give back more. That's what the Barisan symbol is all about. So what's so special about this present Federal Government? NIL.

Rocky, trying to be smart here has made you look so inhuman. All cabinet decisions are collective. The head honcho should take the responsibility.

Just like you used to blame Pak Lah for almost everything the government decided when he was PM. You have conveniently forgotten.

  13. Wasn't Nazri the guy who denied in Parliament that he gave out 15,000 taxi permits and then later admitted it was about 12,000?

This conspiracy to raise fares figures. That's why you should not vote BN/UMNO.

Fares were already put up 30% by schoolbus operators last year when it was $1.92 per litre. I know because my kids were affected. So, what's the rational for the increase now that its' come down to $1.80 per litre? And most taxis don't use this expensive petrol; they use Petronas LNG.

How are the poor, low and middle income groups going to manage? This UMNO/BN Govt cares nothing for the masses. This talk of 1 Malaysia ia all hogwash, eyewash, window dressing and plain BS!!

Khazanah, EPF etc among them own more than 80% of PLUS and some other Highways. Instead of buying out the minority parties, reducing tolls to a level sufficient to pay for maintenance and make say a 10% Return on Equity, all Njaib can think of is giving rebates to frequent users. This is not of much use to the masses. One suspects that vested interests of political parties is at work.

The Govt should force the toll operators to cut toll by 50% since they will still make a huge profit. If you don't believe that, let's have an open tender and we will see how many will bid with lower tolls for the projects even when no automatic increase in toll is allowed or Govt (Taxpayer)compensation for traffic shortfall!!

But, no. This Govt will continue to burden the poor and the masses? Who will you vote for Malaysians, come GE 2013?

We can understand the plight of taxi drivers and school bus operators..

However most kids using school buses mainly come from the lower income group..

Keluarga2 miskin juga kebiasaan rumah mereka berjauhan dari sekolah yang terdekat.

Say one family earning RM1,500 (lower income group) with 4kids at RM60 each totalling 16% on his gross pay! Wang belanja, bayar itu ini aktiviti tambahan (after school hours) etc will come up to 20%! And I can bet many are earning less then RM1,000.

    Gross pay 1,500
    Less EPF/Socso aprox 150
    Less transport/misc 200
    Less sewa/loan rumah murah 300
    Utilities 50
    Pakaian keluarga (six) 200
    Tambang bus sekolah 240
    Makanan/ubatan....RM11 sehari!!

    Jenuh kebulur ler keluarga ini!

hmmm... nampaknya solution yang mereka terpaksa mengambil, sembunyi anak2 mereka kat rumah waktu sekolah, kerana tak mampu..

Tambah pula PSMI telah dimansuhkan. Nak tiusyen lebih BI tak mampu.. Akhirnya, akan lahir generasi muda sekadar bekerja kat kilang...

go to bangkok, toyota Altis taxi, starts at RM3.5(Bhat35) due to traffic jams but medium to long distance, the fair is much cheaper than Malaysia. Taxi is so easy to get and 90% of them use meter and 5% who don't, you tell them meter and they will use it.

Subang to LCCT, here is RM55, in Bangkok same distance is RM23 + toll fares borne by customer.

I think it's fair that these fees rise. Why?

    1) It has been offset by the toll discount.
    2) The taxi fare has been too low for too long. Of course this applies to the starting pay for graduates as well but it's another topic for another day.

    Regarding item 2)

    a) Judging by the comments here, Malaysians have no consideration for the lower classes. While we think it's fair to work in a comfy office and receive pay increments yearly, we don't think it's fair for the taxi drivers who work in the sweltering Malaysian heat to get a pay rise.

    b) Inflation will ALWAYS push prices up. Nay, it does not push prices up but devalues money. That RM2 does not buy the same things as it used to.

And to think most of the people commenting here won't even be using the taxi nor send their kids to school via bus!

Pirahhhhh...

  36. In a way, what understanding said is correct. There's always two sides of the story: the plights of the taxi drivers and those of the users. The taxi drivers do not earn much (and the economic downturn will surely affect them), while the users continue to suffer from poor services.

I believe the solution has already been introduced before: every increase in fare must correspond with increase in excellence of service. Even if the results leave much to be desired - taxi drivers continue to deliver less than satisfactory services - I still think it's a fair solution. Maybe the problem lies in incorrect implementation strategies and poor enforcement.

Perhaps bloggers can contribute better solutions to an issue that affect the rakyat directly. Criticising policies is one thing, finding solutions is another matter altogether.

Taxi service is no longer exclusives but essential to some. Not because they can afford it but to some of them, when the needs for any mode of transport services arises they just couldn't get a better alternatives.

To be fair to all parties concerned, they say if the fares do not goes up the industry would go down. So the fares must be up 30%. With this announcement, the industry would of course prefer not to wait but to jump at any opportunity.

However if the fares is up, it is the users who going to feel the gnaw. Definitely, some will make noise and the others may jump down Nazri's throat!

    Now, what to do?
