Despite Malaysia's pretty economic growth over this past few months, something just doesn't seem to be right. It is almost as if the GDP growth figures were manipulated or spiced up.

Well, they weren’t. Contrary to popular belief, the government does not really ‘jack up’ economic figures. It just found clever ways to ‘spice up’ growth figures. That's all.

Let’s use last year as an example. Abdullah found out that the economic figures were not good, and it couldn't have been at a worse time. Elections were just around the corner and he didn't want the economy to appear weak. So he did something very clever - he increased the wages of civil servants. This, of course, leads to higher spending. And as we know, spending helps boost the economy.

I am not saying that civil servants do not deserve a pay rise. But the reason why they were given one couldn't be any worse. Yes, Malaysia is actually a failing economy. China and India are fast replacing Malaysia as manufacturing power houses. Half of Malaysia's GDP figure comes from the manufacturing sector.

If oil and palm oil prices did not increase last year by a mile, Malaysia would have registered an economic growth of somewhere near 3.5%. This is a measly figure for a developing country.

By 2014, Malaysia will no longer be a net exporter of oil. In turn, this translates to losses for every sen oil prices go up.

To achieve developed status by 2020, Malaysia should have registered at least an 8% economic growth annually since 1995 (a developed country should have Purchasing Power Parity of at least RM25,000, and GDP per capita should be close to PPP figures) Right now, Malaysia has PPP of RM14,700 and a GDP per capita of RM6,500.

We have only done an average of 5% increase in GDP growth from 1995- 2007. So Vision 2020 will not be achieved despite what the government might claim. Furthermore, for Malaysia to move up the value chain, (I define this as a country that is able to innovate and produce high- quality products eg companies such as Samsung, LG from Korea) large amounts of foreign direct investments (FDI) are needed.

To show you how low our FDI is, Malaysia has a pathetic RM7 billion of FDI annually while Singapore, a country 100 times smaller then Malaysia, has FDI of RM55 billion annually. Last year, nearly 50% of our FDI went into the Iskandar Development Region. This, in my opinion, is a project bound to be a major failure. When Singaporeans were invited to invest, they did. But when they started to invest, our smart politicians said this would chase the Malays into the jungles.

    To summarise everything up:

    1. Malaysia's economic growth is now based on oil and palm oil prices. (Malaysia will soon be a net importer of oil, and palm oil prices have reached their peak, meaning it will be downhill from here on)

    2. Malaysia's manufacturing sector is shrinking, thus unemployment rates will go up.

    3. Immigrants from Indonesia, Philippines are causing wages to remain stagnant.

    4. Malaysia is suffering from a ‘brain drain’. No qualified professionals want to work in Malaysia anymore.

    5. All the people’s tax money are being used for stupid subsidies and unnecessary mega-projects.

With the present increase in the prices of petrol already half dead.

Do not know whether can last till month.....

    Summary of increase.
    ===================

    1. Cost of petrol usage $400 per month times 40% increase will be $160.00 less the $52.00 = $108.00
    ($52.00 = $625.00 divided by 12)

    2. Breakfast mee soup increased by 20 cents and a month will be 20 sen times by 20 working days in a mth = $4.00 per mth.

    3. Lunch chicken rice increase by 50 sen and in a month will cost 50 sens times 20 days = $10.00

    4. Two children transport to school at $100 times 2 times by 40% = $80.00

    Total increase of cost = $108.00 + $4.00 + $10.00 $80.00 = $202.00

Where to get the extra $202.00 to pay???? Other increases not included!!!!!!!

  12. Put it this way, bro - with the track record of going 180 deg so frequently of late, I really wouldn't hold my breath.

Then again, with the volatility of crude prices, I am surprised that he's made this statement with such conviction, as if trying to make the hole he's already dug for himself a lot deeper, if the Government is forced to review the price again this year.

Incidentally, this is again another flip-flop from the "we will review the pricing on a monthly basis" stand taken earlier.

Walski hopes for the best, but won't be surprised by ANYTHING anymore...

  29. Dear Mr. Rocky,

I would like to suggest to all Malaysians, instead of us doing street protesting on the roads and getting a 'free' beating and shower by the FRUs. What if we do what our datuk nenek had done before to stop Malayan Union. That is, a Malaysia wide Hartal (mogok).

Hartal SeMalaysia - where we the people, stop all businesses and any kind of work for 3 straight days. Everybody stay at home. By this, not even the FRU can do a beating on you if you stay indoors, expecially when it is your own home. This hartal is to show the government that we no longer want the current government to be in the office. That we want the 'insane' hike in petrol to be brought down immediately. That we want to make sure that the people are given back their rights to the country's wealth (including Terengganu's royalty money). That we want to make sure that the cabinet MP's feel what we the people are feeling now.

Do you dare to push this Hartal by your blogging magic? I'm willing to participate in this hartal, and so are my other friends.

Now, after the sharp increase, he can play a good guy game by making "no more increase" announcement.

Politics Must Take the Backseat Now

    www.kulitpisang.com

The axe has fallen. And it fell hard. Petrol price at Malaysian pumps increased by 40% overnight. A hike of RM0.78. But in reality, an increase, no matter how painful, was inevitable. Rational Malaysians are not under the illusion that we will be spared this global phenomenon but the quantity of increase and timing is an issue of debate on the ground.

Members of Parliament and State Assemblymen must have had to use their spare battery last night because the flood of calls and SMS would have overtook the congratulatory messages they received when they secured their seats.

Our elected officials must answer pertinent and pressing questions. Why wasn't there a longer time frame to condition the mindset of Rakyat?. If you save RM56 billion from the reduction in subsidy, where is the funds channeled to? What are the immediate and long term plans for use to encounter this problem? What are proposed improvements to public transportation? Are we examining the use of alternative energy, if yes what is the extent of the study? Is Proton going to manufacture cheap, easily accessible and functioning hybrid cars? What are the policies to assist businesses adversely affected by the hike? How would you enforce retailers increasing prices for a profit?. These and many-many more.

Recent statement by Amirsham and the meeting between Ahmad Said and the PM may have some bearing.

To gain further insights, bro Rocky and all visitors are cordially invited to attend this special convention convened by the Terengganu people:

    KONVENSYEN KEMBALIKAN ROYALTI
    Sejarah, Realiti & Harapan
    14 Jun 2008
    Kuala Ibai, Kuala Terengganu.

    See you guys there!

Hey man.....no time to talk....lets think how to get Dollah Bodowi out of the helm.Put your suggestion here.

We can't rely on UMNO member to get him out. Why? Simply because the money that he got from the fuel hike (Petronas) is used to buy the UMNO members for his survival on the coming UMNO General Assembly.

So, how? it's all lies on rakyat
to protest....whatever means..to out Pak Lah.

Masalahnya keputusan bukan kat tangan dia hanya tukang cakap jer... sbb kalo perhatikan sebelum ni dia cakap x bubar, esok nya bila dapat arahan terus bubar, sama minyak dia & gang cakap minyak tak naik, paling tidak tahun ni x naik, sekali bila arahan sampai minyak terus dalam masa yg singkat. Cuma x pasti dari mana & siapa tukang beri arahan... hmmmm Wayang Kulit......boleh jadi karekter tambahan bergandingan dengan wokyoh, makan buah nangka....

In America, the Dollar is the symbol of power, of world dominance in Economic.

In Malaysia, Dollah is the symbol of much sufferings, no money and corruption.

    just one alphabet, big difference.

How do we get 2 million people to demonstrate in the city tomorrow and day after?

The police must realise that their 200,000 personnel cannot possibly stop 2 million people, even with life bullets!

  93. There are two things that is consistent about Abdullah since he become PM, the first is that he and his close advisors persistently attempt to demonise or destroy Tun Mahathir's legacy any chance he gets and try to potray his PM ship as better than his predecessor. So far his flip flopping decisions and the latest being the way he handled the fuel price hike showed that he has failed to manage the country well and will continue to fail until the day he walks from Sri Perdana. However he has in many ways succeeded in tainting Tun Mahathir's legacy, which is a shame really as Tun practically gave the PM post to him on a golden platter.

The second is that he is almost always consistent in doing exactly the opposite of what he says, therefore, I would expect a fuel hike in 2008 only not sure of the quantum of increase.

  94. Oil walk? Street demo againts oil price hike? Surely a more noble cause and much better reason than the anti-tol demos, the Justice walk, the Bersih walk or HINDRAF. As this one involves all the rakyat at large.
But where are those people who made all those walks happened prior to PRU12.
Oh..many have become MPs, ADUNS,EXCO members, some CM even PM in waiting. They had their big celebration dinners, ex-gratia payments, allowances etc etc..
So people, you think they have time to walk for you now.Don't bet on it!!
Now you know why they walked they demo and all before? All to achieve what they have achieved during PRU12.And their cause is done.
As for you and me and all the rakyat out there?

for a straigthforward yet paramount decision, the PM and his gang in cabinets can flip flop between YES and NO so many times within a short span of time, it only goes to cement the opinion that these are decisions made by habitual liar and cheats, whom really do not understand the meaning of integrity and personnal honour as a MAN.

"Namun pada Jumaat, dua hari selepas pengumuman harga baru, harga dipasaran naik sehingga US$178 setong.
