Datuk Seri who?

And to his friend, he said: Ask, and you shall be given. The value of Datuk Seri-ship is about to change. Kalimullah Masheerul Hassan, according to my sources in Penang, is on the list for the Darjah Gemilang Pangkuan Negeri (DGPN), which carries the title Datuk Seri.
This will be his third datukship: in 2001 he was given the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri by the Penang State governor. His second came from the state of Kelantan.
He does not deserve it but that's my view. Someone in Putrajaya thinks Kalimullah has done enough for Penang and its people to get the title next week in conjunction with the official birthday of State Governor Tun Rahman Abbas.

Oops (at 11.39am, 9 June) .. Actually, Kalimullah got a title from the state of Perak recently. My apologies. So the Penang title will be his fourth!

Well, you know, when a citizen of the state can easily get a few Datukships, Datuk Seriships, a Tan Sriship, become a Senator, Deputy Central Bank Governor, become an adviser to the PM, become a Minister of Finance, even though he SINGLE-HANDEDLY (some say) lost the mother of all losses (yet to be awarded a Malaysian Book of Records entry) from speculating with our country's reserves, why begrude a yet another small gong for Kali, Mullah? Penang needs to give out medals so anybody, anybody, will do.

Next year it will be Kedah's turn. And then Johor, then Terengganu (if still BN), then Melaka, you know, until he's got from everyone. After all he sends his tabloid everywhere.

    Bro,

the value/currency of datukship went down when kalimullah and his ilk received the awards/titles.
tell me.. what did he ever contribute to the states of Penang and Kelantan to deserve the award.

you are right and I agree. kalimullah does not deserve to be be given that award.

    enough said.

  3. Titles for the rich
They don’t even get their hands dirty
Helping the poor society in our midst
Yet every year titles are bestowed on them
Really what have these people done?

    Traders, politicians, academicians
    Senior government servants
They get titles not for helping the poor
Or the distress segment of the society
    It is more on connection
And the liberty of giving money
    For something in gratifications

Some say it can be bought
With few hundred thousands changing hands
Why must titles be given every year?
    Who benefit in the end?

In my time I met a few
    Some can’t even speak Malay
They just want to show off
“I get one you don’t have?”

So now we have thousands titled people
Some truly deserved it others aren’t
I should say let the King does it
In this way we don’t have so many
As they say we can cross them out
    In the traffic jams…………

NST has quite a number of Datuks. Tell me, did they do anything to deserve the titles. Are the papers doing any better. Your guess is as good as mine. When you have states dishing out titles like datuk koyak, datuk seri, you know something is wrong.

Pardon my ignorance. The only Kali I know is the Hindu goddesss Kali, a somewhat nasty piece of work, I 'm told. And Mullah? Is that the chappie who sends his goons to what he considers immoral places to add notches to his gun? All these would make super stuff for a tabloid story. With or without the page three girl? It's the one who is improperly attired in the tabloid The Sun- no difference from the Emperor's New Clothes. Like the child in that story I shall end with "But Mummy, the emperor' hasn't got any clothes on!!!!" But never mind, he's got a title.

  13. Ah....that title.
Well, on Saturday, I just met someone who was asked by a foreigner friend, is the title 'Datuk' is equivalent to a 'Sir'.
My friend, a very succesful retired businessman went on to explain that 'Datuk' is the probably the most common of titles and in his opinion not the same as 'Sir'.
At this point, the foreigner produced a letter signed by a very famous (now Tan Sri) signing of as Datuk (Sir) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _.
How do you like them apples???

Wont be surprised the next tittle for Kali-ular is a Tan Sri-ship followed by most probably, a Tun-ship as long as Dollah Badawi is the PM.

And what has Kali done to deserve all that? Sell the country.

    What a a joke!!

I know a jaga lembu who later became a flight steward for our national airline and with backing from illegal 4 digit operator bought datuk title and now moving around high society, smoke cigars and walk around in suits. Still behaves like a jaga lembu though. Also mamak but fairer comlexion than Kalimamak. Won't be surprised they are moving in the same circle. So what is the big deal with all these f#@*^ng titles. Datoship title is much sought after. I know a young developer who tried hard to get a dato'ship from a state in the east coast but was rejected and this young guy is from Penang. The I noticed the other day, another brother who is a director of a public listed company was awarded dato'ship from Sultan of Pahang, making him on par with his 2 other brothers in the family. This quest for dato'ship is very prominent among the business people in the private sector. For layman like us, I will wait with God's grace when my kids start to have kids on their own, I will be my own datuk.

    Bru,

It's the norm for Penang to award Datuk Seri-ship to NSTP boss. A Rahman Maidin go the same award when he has deputy chairman of NSTP. Check out this guy called Tan Sri Ibrahim Zain. He's the PM corporate point man. Kali is nothing compared to this sidekick of Khoo Kay Peng.

You are next in the long list of people who are taking the mick/piss out of the guy's name which; incidentally, has nothing to do with whether or not he deserves the award. I can never understand why people stoop so low so as to insult the people they disagree with personally. Comment on the substance of the issue "objectively" for pete's sake instead of taking personal pot-shots at the guy, geeze...

Yang Berbahagia Dato' Dato' Dato Kalimullah Hassan... (soon to be Y.Bhg Dato' Dato' Dato' Dato' Dato' Seri..)

Yang Berbahagia Dato' Dato' Dato' Dato' Hishamuddin Aun and the best part is that both of these fellas have NOT even seen the inside of a campus life as students (they ain't got no degree, not even a diploma), well maybe they went into one or the other in the line of their work as reporters previously... hehehe

Terima kasih.

  46. There is a saying that is want were to throw a pebble into a any crowd, one is likely to hit teh head of a datok.

There is so many datok around that it demens the title. Rececntly I heard among my alumni of a 26 year old datok amongst the pemuda umno, likely the kj cronies. What could a kid 4-6 years after university could possibly contribute to society at that age?

Well, as long as the demand for datokship far exceed that of supply, then it will have value to some.

Frankly, with so many dato around that even such datok are really becoming normal people drinking teh tarik under a ketapang tree.

There is no more pomp and pageanty to it anymore! Its cheapen by the excess award. So whether kalimullah deserve it or not, is no more an issue but is the honour really worth it!

To VSS Riong, and anybody else who's naming names:

Look, if you are frustrated by the societal structure of our country that's fine, good for you speaking out and saying how you feel on the wonderful world of the internet.

But could you please be polite about it? Naming names will do nobody any good, and to be honest, when people start saying unsavory things about MY FATHER on a blog that many people read, I start to take things personally.

I'm not trying to start a fight or make you mad, I'm just asking you to stand in my shoes for a minute and think about how it would make you feel if people you've never even met suddenly began saying unsavory things about your father and his friends. Thank you for treading with caution in the future :)
