Ethos' boss is Petronas' new director?

Omar Ong. He's young and, according to some people, too ambitious for his own good. If Khairy Jamaluddin was supposed to have said that he wanted to be Prime Minister of Malaysia by 40, Omar Ong was supposed to have uttered the famous words "I want to be Petronas boss by 40".

If that's really the case, then the Ethos Consulting supremo is well be on his way. According to A Voice in his latest posting Omar Ong to advance Tingkat Empat Agenda with Petronas Appointment, Omar has been given his letter of appointment to the Petronas board as one of its directors. The appointment takes effect this week. Read also Big Dog's take here.

Wonder what the Petronas adviser, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has to say about the appointment. The last time he wrote about Ethos Consulting, it was not very soothing, at least not to the Prime Minister's ears. Read Dr M's piece Tingkat 4 Najib, here.

Some excerpts (but before that please note that the Ethos man above is not Omar Ong; the picture was taken from the movie The Spirit]:

    Bro Rocky,

Operting word was 'kait mengait'...as you can see blinded or funded commentators like Bendahara making assumptions and the whole thread defeats the purpose of you demonising Omar Ong, or unless the intent or mens-rea to run down KJ yet again?

We know your bone is with Kali and brendan, and to be honest good if they are not inviloved with NST anymore, but your 'blog bullying' is becoming old.

Stay on point like BUM, Perak, those were good and progressive, unless you want to lose credibility and end up like a 3rd tier blogger like that Khir toyo paid blogger Avoice. Any taxi driver will tell u that bro.

Dont sound dated. Stay on point.

  11. I really wonder what's happening with the PM? Has he lost touch with the reality? Doesn't he knows what's the expectations of the Rakyat? Isn't he ambitious & not wanting to become the shortest reign PM in Malaysia? It's very much overdue that he has to be Rakyat-centric & not party-centric! Not just by merely acknowledging that the Rakyat is the pulse but Najib should immediately act & deliver on the needs of the Rakyat. Ever since Najib took-over, he has made some blunders notably the cabinet line-up by including dubious characters that the Rakyat don't want to see anymore, the still not yet clear slogan of 1Malaysia, make sure of less rhetoric & more action as required by the Rakyat who has long for a pragmatic & nationalistic drive for a better economy - we really missed so very much the time when Tun Dr Mahathir was the PM when we were proud to be Malaysians - & now the new appointments at MRCB & Petronas. Najib has to act & institute dramatic changes ASAP. Najib has to bite the bullet now! Najib has to be more sensitive with new appointments & these must be Rakyat-compliant. Najib should be aware that national security must be jealously guarded at all times. Controversial & mysterious characters shouldn't even be considered for appointment at companies with strategic national interest. If Najib continue to do things his way, God forbid that this country is going to the pit. The Rakyat wants to see good plans to overhaul the economy & there must be transparency in the form of scorecard tracking the implementation of the plans plus the impact on the economy. Najib should be more engaged with the Rakyat to gather feedback & he must find a mechanism to do so. God help Malaysia, Amen!

These are 'wise' decisions by those in power.

    Why express concern now?

Was it not the same leadership that steered Perak into the folds of BN in avery democratic way?

    Masa itu, no concerns pun?

Ingat tak, itu 31 wujud macam mana?

Satu perempuan disappeared for some days, dan kemudian lompat pagar.

Zambry pun kena jaga lah sikit.

Itu YB Hamidah Osman sangat kesian kepada ular, bukan orang keturunan India macam Zambry. Ingat tak, siapa dia lebih skua tengok mati dulu?.

These are some of the various components that hold together the magnificient BN - which the people 'must' vote for, if they have 'gratitude' for the things they enjoyed the past 52 years since Merdeka.

And Rocky will continue to 'convince' the rakyat that BN is THE preferred choice.

    Malaysia Boleh.

    'AS I SEE IT'

    Dear Mr Rocky,
Almost half of Kencana's RM437 million revenue in its financial year in 2006 comes from Petronas. Kencana belong to Mokhzani Mahathir. Kencana, a firm that provides engineering services to
the oil and gas industry. But, ok, bcos Mokhzani graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1987. But, how/who Omar Ong? Omar Ong, as can be seen from his rather peculiar name, is an ethnic Chinese. He is the son of Mustapha Ong, former Private Secretary to longtime Minister of Information Mohamad Rahmat.

Mustapha Ong became infamous during the Anwar Ibrahim trials when it was revealed he had tried to bribe a New York ethnic-Arab taxi driver called Jamal Amro to “confess” that he had procured boys and women for Anwar. Jamal Amro refused and instead made police reports accusing Mustapha Ong of trying to bribe him. Of course Mustapha Ong was shielded by Mahathir, even though his over-enthusiasm in trying to “fix” Anwar caused some embarrassment to the government, especially amongst the diplomatic community overseas.
Anyway, Omar Ong was a bit of a social climber and very ambitious. He tried to hitch his star to rising politicians as a means of fast-tracking his own ascent to power. He knocked on the door of Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim through the good graces of some of his political secretaries.

This was partially successful, as Anwar was persuaded to receive Omar Ong and his group in a private audience. Several more meetings followed and Omar Ong was hopeful that Anwar would be his ticket to heaven. In spite of that, there was still some opposition from Anwaristas such as Suhaimi Ibrahim, Fuad Hassan and Zahid Hamidi, who really wanted to keep Anwar all to themselves.

But a chance meeting with Daim Zainuddin made Omar Ong soon realise that something was brewing in the very highest circles and Anwar was going to be hit by a runaway bus, so to speak. Quickly, while thanking his lucky stars, Omar Ong dropped “the Anwar project” like a hot potato and tried to go for Najib Tun Razak instead. This was around three months before Anwar was sacked by Mahathir.

Najib, however, was a hard nut to crack. Omar Ong realised that Najib was surrounded by long time loyalists from his earlier days in government who screen newcomers to his circle with a parent’s protective eye. So it was decided that the next best thing would be Hishamuddin Hussein.

Hishamuddin Hussein was then just a junior UMNO politician. But he had a very big name behind him. There was no doubt that, after Hussein Onn died, Dr Mahathir felt that he owed a debt of gratitude to the former third Prime Minister and his family. Dr Mahathir began to put Hishamuddin on the fast track of politics, even over and above Hishamuddin’s superiors in the UMNO Youth movement such as Nazri Aziz and Zahid Hamidi. Hishamuddin got promoted several times within a year.

These fast promotions took its toll on Hisham. He was never a bright student or a sharp intellectual. Neither was he a good speaker nor a great orator. He had an unfriendly face and almost permanent crooked smile which reminded a fellow Minister of “the dead pope – after he had died”. Omar Ong set about helping Hishamuddin and his fellow student from Oxford, Khairy, came along as well. Soon, Hishamuddin began to rely more on Khairy than on Omar Ong.

To pay his debt, Hishamuddin introduced Omar Ong and his group to people close to Dr Mahathir such as his Political Secretary, Datuk Johari Baharom, and ISIS Director-General, Dr Noordin Sopiee........

Selepas dibebaskan, beliau menjalani kehidupan seperti biasa sehinggalah beliau kemudiannya menjadi Setiausaha Akhbar Timbalan Perdana Menteri, Ghaffar Baba.
Bersamanya ialah bekas Ketua Pengarang NST Brendan Pereira, bekas Ketua Pengarang The Star, Datuk Wong Su Long, Cheah Che Kong, Sheikh Akmal dan seorang bekas pegawai kanan sebuah stesen televisyen tempatan.

As a former employee of PETRONAS, I would like to re-focus attention on the importance of protecting the nation’s biggest revenue earner.

I can personally attest to the fact that, like any large organization, PETRONAS is far from perfect. (After all, I did choose to leave for greener pastures!) However, that should not detract from the fact that it largely does get things right. This is what has allowed the company to expand globally, become a Fortune 500 company and contribute roughly 40% to government coffers.

One of the main reasons for that success is the relative independence of the company. The management is given sufficient independence and leeway from its political masters (ultimately, us the people) to allow it to be organised and run like a business.

Upon reading rocky’s post, my immediate concern is that this independence is now under threat. A quick review of PETRONAS’ Board of Directors shows that it consists of the standard list of internal appointees in addition to representatives from the Government (basically reps from EPU, MOF, etc.) to ensure that the people’s interests are served. (Please leave aside comments for now on how well they’re actually doing their jobs to look out for the rakyat’s welfare!)

So it strikes me as rather odd to appoint an individual with no significant oil and gas experience, who does not represent the Government and whose only claim to fame, worryingly, seems to be his political affiliations. Hopefully, the next few days will serve to provide some clarity on what we can expect from Omar.

Why the fuss? Because in the long run, compromising the company’s independence and professionalism will not serve the people well. We could very well see PETRONAS decline and fall. (After the bankruptcy of institutions such as Lehman Brothers, there’s no such thing as a sure bet for corporate winners anymore!)

So I just want to raise the point, that PETRONAS’ independence as an institution is in everyone’s interest and should not be taken for granted. It’s a value that’s certainly worth defending in the days to come.

Cheers for the post, Rocky, and keep up the good work!

Off topic but check it out. Raja Petra's son (Raja Petra the hero of fools) is caught for theft and faces imprisonment. Poor Raja Petra sooo engrossed in destabilising the country with his cocked-up stories, forgot to even look after what his son is turning into.

Well... When the father is a compulsive liar, the son will just turn out to be a thief. Two negatives makes the Petra Family.

I swear I felt a chill of fear sliding down my spine whilst reading your blog on this. What has so far distinguishes petronas from other GLCs, one of its key success factors, is the man helming the company, as well as minimal political interference in the management of petronas. Tan Sri Hassan has always been known and respected as a man of ethics and integrity. Look how far petronas has gone (and of course contributed to the government's coffers) under its past and current management - and we are willing to risk the possibility of having it all go down the drain by having someone whose character has been doubted by many being on its Board and having a significant say to how it will be runned in the future? Are we looking forward to see another company ruined due to such interference?

  55. Dear Rocky,

I read with interest, and then dismay, this post and the comments it attracted.

Not many has said anything about the blatant conflict of interest this "appointment" poses.

All this while, apart from those from Petronas itself, Petronas' directors have always been officials (or ex-officials) from the government.

They represent government's interest, in a government-owned company.

Mr. Omar Ong IS a businessman. If he is appointed a director in Petronas, whose interest(s) is he representing? His own? His proxies?

This what I want to know.

Aku protes. So apa rekod Omar Mustapa dibandingkan dengan Shahidan? Hidup Shahidan! Lebai

Tetapi manusia merancang Allah menentukan. (bersambung)

    Niat baik
    Cara tak reti
    Pahala dapat kerja tak jadi

    Niat jahat
    Cara pandai
    Dosa dapat
    Bangsa tergadai

    Niat jahat
    Cara tak reti
    Dosa dapat
    Kerja tak jadi

    Niat tepat
    Cara pandai
    Pahala dapat
    Kerja selesai

    Renong-renongkan dan selamat beramal.
