Najib's "minor" Cabinet reshuffle

Ong Tee Keat dropped, Chua Soi Lek's son a Deputy Minister. I've met YB Chua Tee Yong a couple of times, the first time when I was in Labis with the Mahkota Kembara in July 2008, and I think the PM's decision to make him the Deputy Agriculture Minister is about the most inspiring news about the reshuffle.

That, and the decision to drop Johari Baharom as deputy minister.***
But a shake-up this is NOT. Nor Mohamed Yakcop and Nazri Aziz, for example, are still up there.
*** Oops, I got this so wrong. Johrari Baharom is ALSO still up there. - 10am, Wed 2 June

It is morally wrong for Chua Soi Lek to appoint his junior as deputy minister. I dont care how smart he appeared to be. He has to make his contribution to the party and society. He has to show he has the stuff and not being his father's son. This is so morally wrong.

This is similar to the MBPJ senior staffs buying the low cost apartments.

Dato Najib, you are the man. Brilliant move to drop Ong Tee Keat, one of very few Cina minister, who could stand in a Malay area, and win on merit. This partly due to his role in exposing the PKFZ scandal. It is equally brilliant of you, to appoint former WIJAYA Baru, ex chairman as a FULL minister. Ong T Keat was instrumental in exposing WIJAYA Baru's role in PKFZ. Dato Najib, as a child my teachers used to call me Otak Air, today I take this opportunity to call you OTAK UDANG. Its me Boss.

Perasaan tak yg Najib memang suka sama lelaki cina yg muda. Entah ngapa, kito pun, x tau. Asal jgn mcm saudara anuar bin ibrahim (BABI) sudaah. Chua Tee baru umor 33, selalu gagap di Parlimen, dia jadikan mentegi. Jho Low, belom 30, pulak dibegi kontrek RM500 juta kat Sg Besi. GENG BABI.

The good news is the berhingus boy KJ is not in, the bad news is the foot-in-the mouth Nazri and the 10-30 percenter Akop are still in.

2 DMs in MOA now - 3-4 the next time - 6 Chinese, involved, all for the Chinese who Najib is all out to please. It's not his father's money, anyway, can create as many DM posts as he wants. "Trust me", "Watch me", he says.

The more people criticise his pro-Chinese acts - liberalisation, liberalism, NEM and all - the more he does it. "Watch me", he says. He is a very daring Malay to be disregarding the Malay sentiment.

MCA ni cerita meritocracy bila menguntungkan mereka aje. Kalau tak mereka mau kongsi ... macam ni lah kalah PRU12 tapi mau kongsi jawatan kabinet.

Haiiii... lagi lama Najib memerintah lagi teruk le Melayu.

Nampaknya PRU13 ni tak tau nak undi siapa. UMNO dan PAS sama aje ... biar menang sorak walaupun kampong dan anak bangsa tergadai !!
PKR ??... lagi tak boleh pakai.

Ayuh PERKASA ... tubuh parti baru ... pasti banyak yang menyokong !! Tapi jgn berjuang nak jadikan Ibrahim Ali jadi PM ... berjuang mempertahan hak-hak & mempertabatkan orang Melayu tanpa menganiaya bangsa lain.
    Yang pasti saya akan menyokong.

    Salam Rocky's bru,

There is no excitement with the long awaited "minor" cabinet reshuffle and neither will it command favourable public opinion. The changes only reflected a sense of "political accommodation" in order to appease MCA,MIC,PPP and to a lesser extend UMNO itself.

One wonders whether prime minister Najib is serious in addressing the critical demand from the public, that after more than one year in office, Najib should be bold enough to revamp his entire cabinet members and not just a token shake up.The majority will not accept certain recycled personality for various obvious reasons from the public perspective.

Having said that, the only exception is the promotion of Chor Chee Heung to the post of Housing and Local Government Minister. Kong's new portfolio as Transport Minister is a poor choice based on his previous appointment in the Housing and Local Government portfolio.Kong is one of the many ministers who are under performed and with his low rating KPI, there is no reason to reappoint him based on his political office as Sec-Gen of MCA.

In the new MCA line up, the others worth mentioning is Gan Ping Sieu and Chua junior Tee Yong which came in as a surprising choice that smells of nepotism. Why should CSL recommends his own son for a cabinet position when there are so many other capable candidates? As for Donald Lim, his appointment will certainly not go well with the majority of MCA and the Chinese community. He did not command favourably in his last appointment as the deputy Tourism Minister.A recycled material and not based on merits but only because of his position as the new MCA vice-president.I believe Ong Tee Kiat is not concerned about the new MCA line up which is the prerogative of the prime minister. Public opinion reveals that Ong is still a very popular, harworking and acceptable grass root politician.Ong should be rewarded considered for another government position outside the cabinet.

The appointment of Palanivel as the deputy minister is another recycled material without much creditability in the eyes of the majority MIC members and the Indian community. Why should Najib accommodate the demand of Samy Vellu, as there was a back door agreement during the Hulu Selangor by-election to appoint Palanivel as a senator and subsequently a position in the administration? We are not denying that MIC need to be accommodated but certainly there are other better choices of candidate based on merits.

As for the PPP appointment, one wonders whether Najib is trying to neutralize the position of PPP in the government.PPP wants the hardworking Murugiah out as deputy minister as he had been axed from the PPP leadership.I doubt this will help PPP to restore public confidence in the ailing party.

I share the opinion of many of our critics that the minor cabinet reshuffle is rather disappointing and will not go well with the public's perception. Not only some notable ministers and deputy ministers should have been phased out based on public criticism and their lowly rated KPIs and performance. Are we looking for another major cabinet reshuffle after this November, when the final assessment of all the minister's KPIs will be known? Only prime minister has the answer that will definitely reflect his desire for a more dynamic cabinet to shoulder heavier responsibility in the new political and economic agenda in order to redeem public confidence in Barisan Nasional leadership.

    Are the two not synonymous?

Or is it your take that meritocracy need not apply to Malaysian Malays?

Of course meritocracy applies to ORDINARY Malaysian Malay. For NOT so ordinary Malays technical 'know who' applies. Do you think ORDINARY Malays can go to university or get a good job if they are not qualified?

What I was saying on my earlier posting was meritocracy is a tool for MCA and Malaysian Chinese to get what they want. In the area of business and education where they have advantages they harped about meritocracy. However when it come to politic they wanted cabinet positions - based on race composition sharing basis - regardless of the outcome of last election.

People like Nazir Razak who was born on a silver platter don't know that there is no such thing as TRUE meritocracy. Tell me how to compete on merit when the economy is already controlled by the Chinese and there are to set of prices - one for the Chinese and one for the Non Chinese. If you don't believe you asked your Malay contractor friend to buy building materials from hardware shop and compare with the price that Chinese contractor get. Same thing with prices at wet market - that's why Malay foods are more expensive compared to the Chinese.

I'm not being racist here ... just want to state the fact of Malaysian life. Najib like his brother who was born on silver platter wouldn't know this.

What meritocracy are you talking about? When the British preferred the Chinese, gave them mining licenses, mining land leases, gaming licenses, trading licenses of all sorts, never bothered about the Malays, never encouraged them to do business, you call that meritocracy?

Hey, we want kesama-rataan, too, you know - in wealth and educational advancement. In fact much more because we are 60% of the population. Forget about Nazir and Najib. The Malays will get them out if they continue to disregard the plight of the Malays.

    Salam Rocky's Bru,

Congratulations on the success of the recently held BUM 2010 on 22th May, 2010.Unfortunately,I was unable to attend the gathering as I had to rush back to JB during the short working visit of PM Najib. However,I have received favourable feedback from our common blogger friend Choon Mei.Choon Mei is quite passionate in her criticism on certain issues, though at times she may have presented biased views against our BN leaders and government.

Coming back to your story following the minor cabinet reshuffle, I wonder why you had assumed that Johari Baharum was taken out of the cabinet of deputy ministers! So you had to delete the statement and thanks for your clarification. The morale of the story is that in your capacity as being close to the corridor of power, you should have check and recheck your source of information on the status of certain UMNO personalities before you comment on their status.Johari is one of the sensitive and controversial character associated with Tun Mahathir and had pitted against Pak Lah's past administration.

The minor cabinet reshuffle, though did not offer any excitement and against the majority of the public's perception and aspirations,it is still gathering storm on both side of the political divide. We have not heard any criticism from the opposition, especially from Anwar, LKS and Tok Guru.

However, both Najib and Chua Soi Lek have issued their statement and justification to appoint Chua junior as a deputy minister. While we respect the PM's prerogative to appoint any candidate to the cabinet,CSL's clarification that there was no question of nepotism in recommending his own son for the appointment is difficult to comprehend.

If that argument is valid, Tun Mahathir and Tun Abdullah should have appointed their own sons or sons-in-law to any government position.I recalled that MCA had made an issue when Pak Lah had contemplated to appoint KJ to a cabinet position, just before his decision to resign from his coveted position as the 5th prime minister.

Having said that, I still cannot agree that Tee Yong's appointment is without controversy that will continue to invite public criticism. However, I agreed that MCA is short of elected MPs but the appointment of senators to the administration is not too democratic.

I have said in my other posting comments, there is an urgent need for PM to revamp the entire cabinet and weed out the tainted ministers and deputy ministers come November, based on the results of the minister's KPIs based on public opinion. It is hope that the next cabinet line-up will help PM to consolidate his power and prepare for the 13th PRU.I hope by then,Khairy will be given the chance to serve Najib's administration as the majority of us feel that KJ has been ignored for too long.He has paid his political liability for being the son-in-law of former PM Tun Abdullah and being surrounded by many cronies.

On the same tone, since Muhkriz is in the cabinet,it is only fair that Tun Mahathir should stop criticing KJ and respect Najib's prerogative to include KJ in his administration.

IMMEDIATE reading by public, when chua put his son, is that, his son is ONLY a seat warmer. His son will also be a remote controller for his father. His son will be a puppet. all these are very poor signs of showing utmost disrespect to general malaysian public.

Yes, it means, that malaysia and MCA are so desperate takde pilihan lain, running out of good people, and MCA as a whole is simply a joke.

Indonesia dulu choose gus dur, macam takde orang lain. whole world pelik. Out of 200M people, is that the best they can find? whole indon looks cacat and stupid.

best part is, this latest scenario, with chua able to remote his puppet son, shows that najib is totally insensitive to malaysian public's integrity and good values. It is not wrong also to read into his action, that he doesnt care what public thinks.

    sad.

iam 110% pro BN, and pro UMNO. langkah mayat dulu sebelum memangkah DAP or PKR, or PAS while N.Ajis fake guy still there. However, these latest najib's move, in a series of recent moves, are sure signs that he is regressing. go backward. down south.

Support your views. I think Najib is being too much, leaning on the Chinese and pandering to their wishes.

UMNO members should come out telling him how they feel.

i guess najib thinks chinese matters more than anyone else because they have the money, means and resources. they are the movers and shakers.

to najib, where kpi is the only factor that matters; where economic indicators can and will change everything and anything; these are very very important element.

memang pilihan, pemahaman, dan assessment yang sangat pandai.

    tapi tidak semestinya bijak.

clever is one thing, but wise is another.

information is one thing, knowledge is another.

knowledgeable is one thing, wisedom is another.

interesting to see whether he can wake up on time before its too late.

to be in number one seat, carilah petunjuk Nya. kpi saja tak cukup...

We'll support BN if u get a modern and centrist leader like Khairy. Non Malays appreciate leaders in BN with brains or dare stand up to the status quo.

So, Nazir Razak is not a "real Malay"?

Or, maybe, Azman Mokhtar, "a former British Chevening scholar and ex-head of research at the Malaysian operations of UBS and Salomon Smith Barney", is not a "real Malay"?

Pray tell, then, who or what is a "real Malay"?

Which reminds me of a certain Megat Najmuddin Megat Khas who studied in the then University of Singapore's Law Faculty (at the old Bukit Timah campus) back in the late 60s and graduated with a Law degree. Megat Najmuddin got in on the basis of merit and graduated on the basis of merit. No special treatment, no skewing of exam results, equal competition with the Malaysian and Singaporean Chinese and Indians. And he was not the only Malaysian Malay who studied in, and graduated from, that Law Faculty in the 60s.

Is Megat Najmuddin a "real Malay"?

    Hidup Perkasa 2:53 PM

Recommended reading for you, Ibrahim Ali, Warrior xxx, anti whatever, Perwira etc - Sidek Saniff's forthcoming book "Paradigma Melayu Singapura" ("The Singapore Malay Paradigm").

In case you are blissfully ignorant, Sidek Saniff was a former Singapore Member of Parliament from the PAP.

Some views expressed by Sidek when interviewed by Zakir Hussain, political correspondent of the Singapore Straits Times ("Taking the tough road pays off" - ST, June 4, 2010):

"I did not want our kids to go to university and be doctors and lawyers, but be stigmatised because they were Malay and got in through the back door. Worse, we would have condoned second-rate doctors or lawyers."

On merit and the Malay community: "Meritocracy has hastened the sense of confidence and equal treatment of Singaporean Malays, who feel they are not being stigmatised and can compete on a level playing field.

"So much so that some of my friends in Malaysia say Singaporean Malays are different - they do not need a crutch on which to compete.

"A Malaysian university professor also made this point, and I am very grateful for this development. The present generation must continue to take it further."

On the views in some quarters that genetics account for Malays doing less well: "I remember a politician saying that talking about genetics is like talking as if humans are horses. You find the best stallions to breed your mares with.

"But we are human beings. We develop and are influenced by situations and conditions around us.

"At the end of the day, we are a small country, or a large kampung or city state. The Goevernment gives equal facilities to schools all over the island.

"That is why people from humble backgrounds continue to excel and do well."

To quote further from the interview:

'Uppermost in his mind...was the conviction that fair competition on the basis of merit was the only way for a place or post to be filled by the best candidate - Malay or otherwise.

'Anything else would be short-changing not just society, but also the community.

'It would also chip away the community's dignity and sense of self-worth, he says, and do more harm than good.'

'Mr Sidek....maintains that meritocracy is very much in line with Malay culture.

'Muslim teachings call for the best-qualified persons to lead the community, he says, adding that the same applies to any job.

'"And meritocracy is a safeguard against corruption," he quips, smiling. He does not refer to any countries in the region, but the inference is clear.'

Perhaps Pak Rocky should consider interviewing Sidek Saniff and publishing his views in the Malay Mail?

Skilganon whatever number to your name - I'll see your worth only based on the strength of your argument,

That number is not high considering that you can't even get the nuance of people's statement about Nazir Razak.

What are you trying to imply by quoting Megat Najmuddin's case, old boy? What "special treatment", what "skewing of exam results" are you talking about? You and the likes of you are in the habit of making statements, snide remarks and innuendos without supporting facts, details and proofs aren't you? You comment here and there, this blog is full of your so-says and they are misleading to say the least, even dangerous when containing unfair, unjustified remarks.

You sound Singaporean, quoting a Singapore Malay MP. Sad, man. Any Singapore MP is PAP except 1-2 i.e those not sued to bankruptcy for saying something against the Establishment. You think the Malay MP would dare say otherwise? You think he would have a got a ticket to Parliament if he says anything not in line with what the Little Emperor in the Little Middle Kingdom aka Red Dot wants?

I also personally know dozens of Malays who ran away from Singapore - University graduates, who can't stand having Big Brother on the wall, watching and listening everything you say, sent to the deep freezer of the department if you don't tow PAP line fully, leak out things like the attempt to change history in that city state.

A recent legislation on illegal assembly gave the Police the right to accost 2 persons walking innocently in the park, according to Tun Dr Mahathir. Of course, you and the likes of you would pooh-pooh TDM - because he pooh-poohed the Little Emperor who was kicked out together with the island state from Malaysia in 1965.

Don't give me the meritocracy shit and confident Malays in Singapore. Don't quote me the Malay MP who has been brain-washed by PAP cadres right from day one of his entry into politics in Singapore. A sad specimen of a Malay you produce having squeezed his balls and the daylight out of the poor soul. There is no telling that parts of his book are also written by the PAP propaganda boys.

We cursed TA Rahman, and continue to do so, for giving away Singapore to the likes of you who then brought in other Chinese that the minority Malays were completely overwhelmed and cowed down in the process. We won't allow you to intimidate Malays in Malaysia and in this blog, and here I am standing up to your nonsense.

Ok, let's get down to specifics.

    - what, exactly, is the "nuance" you are referring to wrt Nazir Razak?

    - I brought up the example of Megat Najmuddin as a Malaysian Malay who qualified on merit to study at the Law Faculty of the then University of Singapore back in 1966-70. Bear in mind that "SU", as it was known then, had no special quotas or minority entitlements for admission to it's professional courses (Law, Medicine, Dentistry and Accountancy).

    - Megat Najmuddin was not the only Malaysian Malay who graduated from SU's Law Faculty. There were others like Mohd Abu Bakar Rautin, Mohd Adzahan and "Sam" Nordin, all of whom qualified for entry on merit and who graduated on merit. All of them returned to Malaysia after graduation and, I think, all of them did well or are doing well. Being subject to a rigourous meritocracy regime didn't do them any harm, did it?

    - That's not to mention several other Malaysian Malays who came to study in SU's other faculties, such as Arts and Business Administration? Were they admitted as a result of quotas or special preferences? No way!

    - if you can mention that many Singaporean Malays "ran away" from Singapore, then I can also mention that there are hundreds of Malaysian Malays who cari makan in Singapore as, let's see now, security guards, cleaners, gardeners, unskilled workers, container truck drivers, auxiliary police, bus drivers, taxi drivers etc. Nothing wrong with the fact that they are making a honest living in Singapore when they could well be working back in Malaysia now, is there? Let's not even get into the fact that there are many Malaysian Malay professionals (bankers, lawyers, doctors, nurses, teachers and IT staff) who are working in Singapore and who have, in some cases, become Singapore PRs. In doing so, are they subjecting themselves to "meritocracy" and all that implies?

    - with regard to Sidek Saniff, the man can hold his own in any debate about Malays in Singapore and meritocracy. Ask yourself why SMNO (the Singapore Malays National Organisation) has failed so dismally to get a foothold amongst Singaporean Malays?

    - I see plenty of confident Malays in Singapore now. Lawyers in private practice, specialists at the top private hospitals, bankers at major foreign banks (including the very chi-chi private banking business) and teachers and principals at Singapore schools. Not to mention those studying in the republic's junior colleges and polytechnics or in the 3 public universities. Every single one of whom qualified on merit, went through the same round of examinations, and who, in the case of Singaporean Malay males, went through National Service. That sounds like an awfully big sample to be brainwashed, eh?

    - oh, btw, it seems that the Little Emperor did just fine after being ejected from Malaysia. Unless you believe that economic rankings and measures of competitiveness are figments of imagination, as are triple AAA ratings dreamt up by the rating agencies. And, of course, TDM wouldn't want to explain just why the Malaysian dollar is worth only 40-something Singapore cents, would he? But that matters a great deal to the Malaysian Malays (and other Malaysians) who work in Singapore.

Spare me the histrionics of what the late Tunku did or didn't do. All I can see is that 50+ years after Merdeka, Malaysia is still trying to make it to "developed country" status - something that may never happen if Perkasa and it's fellow travellers have their way.

And as I posted in another thread, that's no biggie, because there are plenty of other places where one can invest, have a decent lifestyle and make money in good conscience without having to contend with policy "flip flops".

"PM: There's a race to stay ahead and we must not lag behind" (The Star, June 8.

As per the report, the PM said: "There is a new economic order and the nations that will succeed will be those that plan ahead, seek new sectors, with the will to innovate and invest in human capital" (at the 15th Asia Oil and Gas Conference in KL).

Now, which part of that does Perkasa not understand?

"Plan ahead"? Code words for no more flip-flops?

"Invest in human capital"? Code words for meritocracy and a non-ethnic-based approach to human capital development?

Ibrahim Ali - are you taking notes?
