A study tour to New Zealand involving students and lecturers of the Faculty of Communications & Media Studies, UiTM, met with tragedy when the bus they were traveling in was rammed by a truck in Auckland. The dead have been identified as deputy dean Shafiee Ahmad, 51, and 2nd year student Sakinah Ahmad, 21, according to a posting here.

He was my lecturer. He taught me Effective Speaking during Semester 1 in UiTM.

He took us to Taiping for an assignment, he preferred the outdoors as opposed to a cramped four-walled room when he taught.

We had one of the best times of our university lives on that trip, thanks to Allahyarham Tuan Haji Shafiee.

I remember the first time I met him. At first, I was pretty scared of him because he looked garang with his misai and janggut, but he was actually a kind soul. And most importantly, he was damn good at his job. I really enjoyed his class. I even remember the speech I presented for a final assignment and it means more to me now because he gave me the second highest mark in class for that.

I'm sure other students are as disturbed as I am to hear the news.

And I also found out that another lecturer who is involved in the accident just got out of coma but is in critical condition.

May Allah bless them all. Al-Fatihah.

I know quite a number of UiTM Communication lecturers, but can't figure out which is Shafiee. I know another lecturer who was travelling with group, Amirul. Fortunately, I heard in the news tonight, he's ok. Semoga Allah mencucuri rahmat keatas roh Shafiee Ahmad dan Sakinah Ahmad. Amin.

I'm a Kiwi living in Malaysia and I feel for those families of one's killed in the crash. The roads around the Waikato are notorious for accidents, but unfortunately it is mostly tourists who get killed in that part of NZ. The Government has redesigned the roads to be safer, as well as having strict enforcement of speeds and observation of the road rules is their priority. In this instance, it seems that the Malaysians ignored the stop sign and drove straight into the path of the oncoming truck and trailer unit.
It is sad when this happens as you don't get a second chance.
My condolences to the families and students of UiTM.

The lesson of this sad story is:

ROAD DRIVING IS VERY DIFFERENT OUTSIDE OF MALAYSIA.

Some one in the consulate department at High Commission should be fired, transferred or whatever.

It was lucky that somehow, Lt. Col the military attache was sent to help, followed a TNC (not sure of his exact post though), from the UITM.

If not, frankly speaking, I wouldn't know whether the "jenazah" can be flown home.

Mind me saying, there are still one student in the ICU and another in ward waiting for discharge.

It is very lucky for them that the Malaysian student community in Hamilton are helping out.
